ultimate winter protection?

for the most durable protection, everyone seems to agree that Zaino and Collinite are the go-to products. has anyone ever combined the two and topped Z with Collinite? would that just be a waste...or do you think there is any benefit to protect from road salt during winter? (i'm in Wisconsin...)

i imagine my Zaino will hold me through just fine...but this IS autopia we are talking about! :2thumbs:

Zaino for me too. Going strong since June 19 on my personal car (Z5P/Z2P) combo. Come late OCT early NOV I will add Z-2Pro 2X. Then on 1/2 my hood I will add IW #845 and call it a winter. I need to see for myself what affect Collinite has on Zaino thru the winter.

I believe a few autopians on here have topped Z with C.

I have topped Z2pro with 476,and 915,simply because i didn't like the 'look' that Zaino gives.I didn't observe better durability,but it didn't diminish either.

Why not use Werkstatt's Prime as a base for Zaino? If you like the look of untopped Zaino, that is the route I'd go.

If Wisconsin is anything like Ohio, any of these products can last all winter even if outside 24/7, but IMO it's really Zaino and *Klasse SG*, which has lasted all winter and then some for me. The Collinite never quite lasts as long as many layers of SG.

Much as I like Collinite (and use it as my winter wax on a number of vehicles), if I had Zaino or SG on something I'd just add more of that.

The only advantage I can imagine to adding Collinite to the mix is that Collinite beading (and the concealing of a little marring), but that wouldn't be enough for me to add it to a good sealant.

Most Zaino enthusiasts would agree that topping Zaino with anything is a big "no-no" (For the record, I don't use Zaino. However, it's the general consensus among those that do).

Remember, more layers of anything doesn't necessarily equate to better protection. It's the simple upkeep by means of weekly washing and use of "booster sprays" that will help to extend the life of your protectant.

@Wise 85,

i'm interested in what "look" did Collinite give to the topped Zaino?

did it darken it, lighten it, make it wetter, slicker?

On dark blue metallic, using the 915,it didn't change the look that much, but it did enhance the colour, and made the paint brighter. When i put 476 on top of Z2pro,it warmed it up quite a bit,and also darkened the paint, which the 915 didn't do.I don't think the slickness changed to be honest, but i did notice more dust attraction and reduced resistance to water spots,a small price to pay if you want to distort the 'look' of Zaino.Hope this is usefull.

Yes, very helpful for me. Thanks.

I find Z2 to have less dust attraction vs. carnauba and less water spotting vs. carnauba like you say. Personally, I like the crystal clear look of Zaino but I'll still do half my hood with 845 just to see how it shows.

Klasse AIO followed by Collinite's IW has given pleasing results thru the winter season. I can't see why you couldn't use WS Prime as a base for Collinite.

evenflow, I'm pretty sure that the 845 will give you more protection than the #16. Make sure you put 2-3 layers, though. Layering the wax will increase the durability significantly. Also don't forget to let the 845 cure for 1-2 days before putting on another layer.

I am confused. I have about used up my pre-VOC Klasse AIO. I thought the new post-VOC AIO was not as durable and wouldn't last the winter. Infact, alternatives like Prime, Zaino, Prima ect were going to be my options for the winter. :nixweiss

I understood that the determining factor here is whether or not the LSP has cleaners to essentially prevent layering. I've read accounts here of people finding significantly improved durability of LSPs without cleaners.

I did a few panels on my wife's A8 with 845 just to see if the post-VOC-reg stuff was OK (and yeah, it is). Much to my surprise the beading/slickness of the 845 didn't last as long as that of the older #16 on adjacent panels! I know that there's more to durability than those two characteristics, and I'm not saying that 845 is categorically less durable than #16, and I sure didn't expect that, but that's what happened :nixweiss

No, I don't dislike 845, I'm putting it on the new beater. But I'll be topping it with 476S (I know, using them in that order is weird but I have my reasons :D ).

ashsarna- Used by itself, AIO (pre or post-VOC) never lasted all that long for me anyhow. I'd consider just buying a can of Collinite 476S. If you've never used it you're in for a treat (IMO) and it's cheap enough that if you don't like it you're not out much.

I'm going with 2 coats of DG #105, with toppers of AW. Have absolutely no doubts about this simple, yet effective, combo for winter protection for me.

how does SG last compaired to #21?

this winter i am planning #20-->#21-->#21-->#26__>gold class if if have time

(you may think its over kill, but i live in Calgary where it is winter 9 months a year LOL)

but if SG is better than 21 then i will buy some just for the winter

This worked well for me during a Pennsylvanian winter:

AIO

Z-2 Pro - lasts a long time but not the best protection for bird bombs or acid rain

476S - even put on thin this stuff seems thick

OCW - to maintain after every wash
