No quite sure. You are the professional photographer. Probably a more acute angle and lighting might have presented the unevenness in the surface contour?. Metallic flake presentation does not require any magnification to be present in a picture. So flake presents or absence does not fortify the evidence presented.
Personally, I truly doubt that any LSP, including my favorites, will prevent etching over the long haul just from the fact that no LSP is more resistant than the clearcoat on the vehicle. Most clearcoats etch quite easily, depending on the bird's diet, from such assaults and especially so when the offending agent goes though multiple wet(dew) / drying (Sun) cycles.
If anything this demonstrates the resistance of VW paint to such assaults and neglect.:sadwavey:
