Two examples (red & black) of Gusbubba's work on very old tired single stage enamel

This post is long over due. I wanted to show Gusbubba's work on a few of my cars over the last couple years. Both of these cars have very old single stage paint in very poor condition. This just goes to show what you can do when you know what you are doing.

First example is a 1985 Mercury Capri RS/GS (basically a Mustang GT with a different body). This car was pulled out of the weeds after it was sitting outside on a farm for years. It wears its original red single stage enamel paint. The paint was severely faded, oxidized, marked and scratched. In addition, the original owner backed into the left front fender with her tractor. When I did a partial resto on this car I decided to paint a large pit-stripe over the repaired fender and have Gusbubba save the original paint.

Single stage baby! :)

The second example is a 1974 AMC Javelin AMX. The exterior was repainted once in 1987. They sprayed single stage enamel over the original single stage enamel. The paint is dry, scratched, swirled, marked and cracking. Gusbubba went over the paint this past summer.

It takes years of experience and tons of patience to revitalize old single stage paint correctly. The one thing I like about single stage better than BC/CC is that you can "feel" the paint and the results are more rewarding. I will let Gusbubba answer any questions about the products, pads, or techniques he used.

Thanks Tom!

They both look great. The idea of the stripe to keep the paint was perfect.

Thank you. Lots of people asked me... "why didn't you just paint the fender red?"

The answer is, most people don't realize that it is almost impossible to match 25-year-old red paint that sat outside for 10 years. I don't care how good you are at mixing and blending, it will NEVER be the same. My biggest pet-peeve on a car is when a panel is a different color/shade/texture than the other panels. I preferred to keep all the red all original paint. I did a lot of experimenting in Photoshop before I decided on that stripe. The car was modified with a 300hp engine, so the stripe worked with the whole theme. I feel the band-aid was successful and I was happy with the final results.

Almost forgot, here is a walk around video of the car with start-up and engine revs.

Damn! Great work on two extremely uncommon and unique cars. Those Capri Fox's are the only 4 eye mustang I would ever own. They just look so cool.
