Trouble getting Z5 of car

I polished by Black car with Meg #9 swirl remover and it seemed to do a good job. I topped it with a coat of Z5. I came out to the garage 1.5 hours later and could not get the Z5 off the car. I was rubbing pretty hard with cotton towels but couldn't get it all off. I assumed it was dry because it wasn't streaking or anything. Can Z5 be put on top of a polish like this, and why wouldn't it come off the car ?

BTW: I ended up putting another cleaner/wax on to get the Z5 off.

I'm guessing that you had trouble with it because you applied it too thick. I see that you're new here, and a lot of new members ask this question with various products. The wax or sealant layer that you apply should be barely visible. It doesn't need to be 1cm thick. You'll end up with the same amount of protection after you buff off the excess.

Some products are more tolerant of thick applications than others. Try loading #7 or SG on thick and you'll regret it.

No Z1 or Zfx. Just wshed it, polished the paint with a Meguiars product to remove some scratching and applied Z5. I may have put on too much. If I use 1/2 bottle Z5 for an entire mid/large car is that too much ? Its hard to swallow that putting on too much can make the product such that you can't get it off.

How big is this bottle?

I haven't used any of the Zaino products, but I'm going to walk out on a limb here and say I'm pretty sure that's way too much. Someone else that has used Z5 can tell you for sure.

Ok, so you put too much on, it dries, and it doesn't come off :hm

Whats up with that ? So I guess 'll have to strip off the zymol and then try to rapply a super-thin coat. Then it should come off easy, correct ?

Yes. When Zaino dries is becomes pretty hard, so the more you put on the more difficult it is to remove. Like White95Max said, it should be applied so thin you can barely see it. If you're wondering, as you apply it, "Is it even going on the car?", then you're probably applying the right amount. It should be very, very thin layer.

Most sealants are the same way.

Half the bottle for a car! :faint: Like others have said, that's WAY WAY too much. You want to be asking yourself, "Self, am I even covering the paint with product?" as you're applying it. And you MUST use either Z1 or ZFX with the initial application of Zaino polish for it to bond correctly.

I'd go over it with a 50/50 mixture of IPA/Water and start over, using about a half an OUNCE to do the entire car. It should dry very quickly if using ZFX and buff off effortlessly.

Half a bottle!!!!!

My god man, i can do my truck like 20 times with one bottle.

I dont know how set you are in using Zaino, but i will send you a half a bottle of UPP for your Z5. UPP is way user friendly, and requires no mixing or anything special really.

OK, lots of good comments and I'm sure you're frustrated. First go over to the Zaino site Tips and Tricks http://www.zainostore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SGSCFID&Store_Code=Z

You need Z1 or ZFX as a base for the Z products. Once done, you can add another layer without either, but the ZFX makes things quicker. On the first body panel, you will probably need 2 or 3 pea sized drops to saturate the applicator and spread the product. After that, a PEA size drop will be more than enough for most body panels. Most cars (or my Tacoma with a fiberglass lid) can be done with about ONE OUNCE of Z! Remember you are layering this product, so go VERY THIN with the coats!

If Z teaches you anything, it's thin coats!

I guess you have your answer by now!

A good way to make sure the layers of Zaino are thin enough is to spray your foam applicator with Z6 before putting on a pea-size portion of Z2 or Z5.

This helps to lubricate the paint for easy application, and it will go on very THIN.....

Good luck. :xyxthumbs

ok am I missing something? he definitely put it on too thick but if there was a bonding problem wouldn't it have just wiped off the Megs #9? it sounds as if it was sticking to something.

Yes, it was defintely sticking (bonding) to the paint. Zaino does not require Z1 or ZFX to get their product to stick as some have suggested. ZFX is used to speed up curing time of the sealant before you apply another coat. Z1 is recommended after Z5 to really make the finish come alive, but if you don't use ZFX you must wait (1-2 days ?) for the sealant to cure before applying sequential coats.

I don't think it was a bonding problem. I'm sure it bonded fine, there was just way too much of it. The first time I applied Z5 I used too much by about an ounce, and it was hard to remove. The OP used half a bottle, that's like coating the car in a Zaino frosting.

Just give it a go again with much thinner layers. :)

Zaino does require the use of Z1 prior to, or ZFX within, the first application to bare paint.

See steps 4/5 here: http://www.zainostore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=Z&Category_Code=APPLICATION

That doesn't mean it won't look nice if you leave that out, but don't expect the best results or durability.

Yep, what he said. States right on the website you have to use one of the two catalysts. Also, you wouldn't use Z1 by itself after Z5. It is a cleaner type product (non-abrasive) that preps the surface for Zaino polish. You use it once every 6 months to a year (or so many number of coats) to re-establish proper bonding of the Zaino polishes. Maybe he meant Z2.
