Tried Collinite 885 today... questions

It was a warm 40 F today so i'd figure i take the opportunity to wash the car.

This is my first time using a paste wax so i didnt know what to expect. The can was too small for my applicator pad so i had to squish the pad in the can. Did that multiple times to get the entire pad. I used the yellow autozone microfiber pad.

The wax went on incredibly thin. So thin that i couldnt see where i had just applied it. But i knew it was there because i buffed the area and felt the paint and it was slicker than the areas not waxed. It goes on and off incredibly easy. Much easier to apply and wipe off than Black Magic Wet if any of you have used it before. Wipes off easy like NXT 2.0.

I used it on the windshield and side windows. It was getting dark so i couldnt see if it streaked or smudged or anything

Questions:

Does it cure?

Is it supposed to be slick like NXT 2.0? Because it's not as slick.

I had the same experience with 476 and 845. Its no where near as slick as NXTv2 nor does it look near as good. Im only using it as a winter wax so durability is all that matters to me. Beading is still amazing though!

Haha, I had the same problem, the stuff goes on clear. I couldnt see where I had put it!

And yes, it does haze.

845 will outlast NXT

That answers all the questions and ends all conversations about that. The amount of help put forth with that comment will never be triumphed.

This thread isnt even about 845. :up

Hi, what kind of shape is the paint in? What did you do for your preparatory cleaning step before applying the #885? I know it was 40F outside, how could was it where you applied the #885?

I have a 2006 Civic so the paint is in good condition. It had some swirls than can only bee seen in the right light and angle. I didnt do any paint correction or cleaning since i only had 3 hours of daylight left. 3 hours is roughly the time it takes me to wash and wax, and that is what i did. It was 39 degrees according to my thermometer. I just wanted to take advantage of the above-freezing temps to get a layer of wax on.

I know the can says 55 degrees :nervous2: lol

It was 34 here today, and i applied a coat of #476/885 to my car. The sun was out, so that kept the car paint heated. Applied and wiped off easy, but does take a little more elbow grease when it is cold. But I didn't have any type of bonding issues. Carnauba paste seems to do ok for me in low temps.

This wax doesn't have that slick feel until you get a few coats built up. Helps if you clayed recently.

Correct. All i did was wash.

why?

well, that's the most fundamental of fundamental questions. Most products of this type clearly specify that the product needs to be applied to a cleaned/poished surface. I'll compare the situation to painting a surface that's dirty or has flaking paint: My expectation of adhesion and how the job looks, when complete, will be diminished.

As times passes, you'll come to realize that the prep steps are resposible for 90% of the finished product, not the other way around. You could apply one of the $2,500 Zymol waxes on a less than perfect surface and be disappointed with the look and the longevity. While there's nothing wrong with you you've done, apart from applying at much too cold a temperature, I think the product's lifespan is going to be less than you'd hope for. When all the critical steps are in place, the lifespan of some of these modern products can be quite remarkable and offer looks to match.

I am completely aware of that. But i'd rather have some wax than no wax. Next year, i will clean and use collinite before it gets too cold. This year, i found out about collinite in the middle of winter. With no garage, i just had to take advantage of the weather and do the best i could.

That makes sense, BM. I think you'll be quite pleased with the final product when you have a chance to work with it when the weather is warmer and conditions more favorable.

After that snow, ice, rain storm 2 days ago, the paint no longer feels slick and slippery. Is that normal? I dont know if it still beads or not.
