Touch Up Paint Not Matching...

Recently I scraped my bumper (dont ask, stupid mistake). It exposed plastic and primer. Really ugliness. So far I done these all by hand.

1 - wash clay off crap

2 - wet sand 3000 grit

3 - polish #1 from Quixx

4 - touch up paint layer 1 (6hour cure)

5 - clean with water

6 - touch up paint layer 2 (24hour cure)

Seem to have enough paint on at this point

7 - light sand 3000 grit

8 - optiseal

I have Gray Metallic. The touch up paint was from factory. It seems much much lighter and no flakes. What did I miss or do wrong? As for now, I have 3 layers of optiseal on it, until I can figure what to do next.

Looks like crap. Amateur. Yes I know. I dont care to get the scratch lines out.

I just want to get the color to blend better. Any ideas?

Why would Optiseal make it look better? Wax wouldn't make it appear more blended in. I think you'll have to machine polish it down, its looking a little rough and bumpy.

That looks like really big areas of touch up paint. Was the damage really that wide, or was it only in the deep scratches that the primer/plastic was exposed?

Make sure you really shake the paint to get the flake mixed in, but be aware that brush-applied touchup will never look like sprayed paint.

The good news is that if you want to re-do it, all that paint will wipe right off with laquer thinner. If you want to try to fix the existing up some more, you might want to try leveling it down (carefully) a bit more with the 3K, and then, as ZoomBoy noted, it needs to be polished to restore the gloss.

I just put the optiseal on for protection until i can think of what to do next later in the week. dont want just leave the paint exposed.

Did shake the bottle. I guess i can try to sand it down a little more. I dont have a machine polish. Whats my next best thing by hand?

Is the damage as wide as the painted areas? If it isn't, I would try to remove the touchup with paint thinner and do it again, the less paint you have the less noticeable it will be, unless you are going to sand it (with a flexible block) until all that's left is in the scratches.

Why didn't you use the Quixx polish after the last sanding? I'm not really familiar with that, but you're going to need to use a polish that has some cut to remove your sanding marks.

Touch up paint will rarely match exactly with factory paint. It's going to be different no matter what basically. To get more metallic flake, simply shake the bottle for about 2 minutes.

I had the same problem with my metallic blue car. I had factory touch-up paint and it came out lighter than the finish. Then I bought a bottle of clear from autozone and dabbed the touch-up paint and it darkened it alot and is now very close to matching the car paint. I only have to wetsand it to get it leveled then polish.

Try some clear on yours (think you may need to take off the optiseal first) maybe it'll work to darken it.

good luck.

That looks like a metallic paint job. Metallic paint will NEVER match perfectly. The way the metallic stands up when coming out of a paint gun versus an airbrush, or a paintbrush is completely different. It will always look darker. Sometimes you can add a little pearl to the touch up and it will lighten it up and match better.

bro it's touch up..not respray..you need to respray thapanell..also the paint is gonna look different since it wasn't sprayed evenly rather painted on with a brush..people have a hard time making a few chips..but that is alot of damage..

also the clearcoat makes a big deal..it will change the color of the paint..

Ok. Thanks guys. Again, I am not looking for a perfect detection proof fix. Just to get the paint to blend a litte better so its now just on light smear. Looks like store bought clear coat is worth a try. Any one have pictures of clear coat that can be bought at autozone or autobarn?

Wouldn't you be better off sanding down the whole section and doing a bigger repair? It looks really uneven and it's going to be harder to fill right when the paint is all uneven everywhere. Harbor freight sells a $5 airbrush that would look 1000X better than doing it by hand. Such a small investmen for a much better result.

Also with Metallics it's never going to match if you want it perfect. Either live with it not matching or respray the whole panel.
