Top Ten Pet Peeves...

My #1 pet peeve is that now that cars are clearcoated, people who never put so much as one drop of polish or wax on their car since the day they bought it can still have a car that looks almost as shiny and well kept as people who go through all the work to take care of their car!

I don't think I have ever seen a single car that has "never been touched" look as good as the ones on here. It's just not possible.

JaredPointer,

If you would have read my post more carefully, you would have noticed that I said, "ALMOST as shiny and well kept". Of course you can make a vehicle look much better than most of the others that you see on the street by using the products mentioned on this forum but it used to be that cars would become extremely oxidized if people neglected to take care of them before base coat/clear coat paint systems were used. And most of us see other cars while we're driving on the road - not walking up to someone's car within a couple of feet and staring at their paint finish to see how many scratches and swirl marks they have on their car.

Clearcoats...

A neglected clearcoated finish looks absolutely horrific in direct sunlight (especially dark clearcoated cars). I mostly detail in harsh wharehouse lighting conditions, and the darker colored cars look terrible before buffing. (even on newer finishes)

Take a look at your neighbors 3 year old black daily driver on the next sunny day !!! :( !!!

I thought this thread was about personal Pet Peeves, not condemning others' opinions. I don't think that there are any "detailing EXPERTS" on here but what do I know...I only have close to half a century of experience working on automobiles in the auto body, re-painting and professional detailing trades.

Before clear coats were introduced, a car that was neglected for even a few years would end up with paint and primer that was dead all the way to the metal and it took real art and knowledge to bring these finishes back to life. A neglected car used to look like a chalkboard, not still have a fair amount of gloss remaining like today's finishes. That's why base coat/clear coat finishes were invented in the first place. This is my last post to this thread.

Sorry, I should have stated that I have never seen a car "never touched" that looks almost as good as the ones on DC. I still don't think that it's too plausible. Just a personal opinion, but you can tell when someone maintains their vehicle and when someone doesn't.

I agree with you on clearcoats not oxidizing as bad as a single stage paint. But I tend to think its more process & procedure than it is product alone that keeps a car looking good.

I, for one, do tend to walk up to cars and inspect the finish a lot of times. I am sure I am not alone in this practice. All in all, it is personal points of view. Some people will see things differently than others.

Another statement I have to disagree with you on. I see quite a few poeple on DC who make a living detailing cars, so I would have to say that would be their expertise. I don't understand you taking any of this personal, I just happened to disagree with you on the earliest statement you made. You are the one who tried to bust me out stating that "I should have read your post more carefully." I read it right the first time, and I still disagree with you. If you think a car that has never been touched looks as good as a Detail City or Autopian car, something's up with your perception.

Clearcoats vs. Single Stage

Personal ???

Am I missing something here ??? I work on both systems regularly, and on some cars I actually prefer working on single stage paint. Especially the SS paints on Jags and Benz's of the early 1980's. The jags and Benz's cut like butter and seem to have about 1/2 inch of paint to work with. :) I believe much easier to remove scratches (IMO) from single stage, whereas CC paint leaves more chance for error.

As far as neglected clearcoats looking "almost as shiney and well kept". I JUST DON'T SHARE THAT OPINION AT ALL !!!

Thank you for your very high opinion of yourself and your skills, we should be honored to have you here.
