Scottwax: you brought me a blast from the past with Triumvirat's "Spartacus"... they didn't get the accolades they deserved.. many thought of them as the German Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Wow, I'm not the only one who has heard of them?

I was a big Genesis, Kansas and ELP fan so a friend of mine handed me Spartacus and said I'd like it. I did. My older son really likes it too.

Somehow I managed to forget that Paul Gilbert and Buckethead existed when I made that list...

Not to mention Chet Atkins and Keaggy...

What the heck is with you guys? No love for Eddie Van Halen?

As far as Van Halen goes....well, no one's listed him cause he's so terrible compared to everyone else that's been mentioned :P

(I'm kidding, by the way)

David Lindley (lap steel work on "These Days," by Jackson Browne)

Waddy Wachtel (great session guitarist for many artists, esp. Warren Zevon; his bridge in "Johnny Strikes Up the Band," is awesome)

...and of course, the great Roger McGuinn

I became a bigger Jeff Beck fan with his cool album last year, Emotion and Commotion. Here's my favorite track from it in concert:

Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top is thought of as a deity by most rock guitarists, even some of the ones you guys have cited.

Mike (amazed at the sound those 3 guys put out)

Unfortunatley I have never heard him play more than three cords:noidea:

This is a topic that is going to get a very wide variety of answers, all of them valid. Here's my few cents.

Guitarists I have seen in person - Clapton, Joe Perry (surprised no one else mentioned him), Billy Gibbons (yeah, not versitle, but love the sound), Eddie Van Halen (you CAN play a guitar with an electric drill), Kenny Wayne Sheppard (opened for Aerosmith-did a great "Voodoo Child," still putting out really good stuff on his own)

Guitarists I would like to have seen - Jimi, Joe Satriani, Carlos Santana, Pat Travers (yeah, Scottwax - "Boom, Boom, Out Go the Lights"), Jeff Beck

I'll just say that I saw Clapton in DC about 6-7 years ago. Most concerts, everyone is standing. That night, everyone sat and listened.

It didn't hurt that he had Billy Preston on keybords that night, though.

"I know, it's only rock and roll, but I like it!"

Watching the guy, I agree with you....but other major rock guitarists point out that he fills major gaps in rhythm as well as filling in great leads almost simultaneously.

Mike (has a Les Paul, but has never challenged any of the nominated guys)

My fav guitarist: Pat Metheny

1. Facing West - cruising in a nicely detailed Cabrio on a nice sunny day on a winding road with a nice vista of the open ocean. Wow!! Uplifting!

2. Better Days Ahead

It just makes you happy!

One more from Pat Metheny

Above The Tree Tops.

Features an unforgetablly haunting chant performed by Cambodian kids who're members of the Choir of The Royal Cambodian Palace.

This is a very depressing piece of work, and certain Asian YTubers have correctly associated this piece with funeral music.

David Gilmour

Eddie Van Halen

Jimi Hendrix

Carlos Santana

Eric Clapton

B. B. King

Jimmie Paige

Slash (really, nobody mentioned him?)

Brian May (or him?)

Alex Lifeson (Rush. Or him?)

OK I'll play this game.

After 4 pages no mention of these guys?

Robin Trower.....a sound all his own

**** Dale....the king of the surf guitar

Dickey Betts...real southern rock

Ritchie Blackmore.....nothing needs said

Are we censoring out the name ****? A nick name for Richard?

Rudolph Schenker and Matthias Jabs with Scorpions...........on No One Like You

Mike (Has their start of the song as his ring tone!)
