Too much product??

I did my first "real world" PC detail today. I had only practiced on body panels before. I have a question on something and was wondering if you guys could help me out. As I got about 1/4 of the way though the car, if I put any pressure on the PC, I would get alot of product back onto the panel. In other words, after my 3-4 minute "buff time", if I pressed down on the PC, the pad would put more product back onto the panel. The amount of product that went back on to the panel after I pushed down almost looked as if I was starting all over again. Is that normal? I used a ring about 1" from the edge of the pad each time I started a new area...
 
DS, lessen learned here is, move on to the next panel without adding more product. What product and pads are you using ? You barely want your product visible while your using it. If you have to look twice to see it, its probably just the right amount.
