Oh I've fired them up alright...tons of light, but very nice for seeing those imperfections. The timer idea actually came from my step-dad who by most part did all the work. I knew NOTHING about electrical wiring. So I just followed him around learning everything I could. I'm not exactly the best handyman! The halogens are actually for outdoor use only. They are extremely hot, they heat up the garage at least 5 degrees. Timer is a nice touch for worry warts and energy savings.
As the project progressed, I purchased a propane heater too! 30k BTU, doesn't make the garage room temp, but nice enough for a sweater and no gloves.

Being from Rochester, NY our winter lasts from Nov->mid-April, so a heater is imperative to detailing in the winter here.
We can always add flourescents to this scheme (1 in the middle of both front and back). I didn't get the 8 ft. partly because the lamps are huge and can't fit them into my car and $ was an issue. The 4 ft. flourescents were $15 a piece at Lowes and like $3 for a two pack for the bulbs.
The most expensive part was the wire.
When it came down to the end, we wired and lighted up the garage and basement for under $500! All materials were purchased at Lowes.
EDIT: I didn't get the cold start up flourescents. They were more money and I didn't see the point. With the non-cold start ups it says not to use in 50F and below. PFFT! I fire those things up at 30. They take around 5 seconds to get up and lighted, they flicker for about 5 minutes, then are at full power. For quick runs into the garage (garbage and what not) I'm going to get a motion detector BUG-EYED incandescent light (o/\o) and plug it into the garage door opener outlet. One light shining on each bay..of course! So I'll have halogen + flourescent + incandescent lighting all in a 20x22 ft. space! BWHAHAHa.
