Today's Lesson Boys and Girls...

This is a place to learn so I hope my experience helps others.

I feel your pain, I did the same thing on one of my Father's cars the day before a Concours d??l?gance, I wet-sanded with 3000, it got past my Dad but not the judge's, but it brought me some time until I could get it replaced

Plastic

Plastics contain plasticizers (Flex agents) to help them maintain flexibility so that they can respond to temperature changes as well as fillers that determine the type of surface finish. Do not machine polish the paint on non-metallic panels (rocker panels, spoilers, etc) as it is much softer due to the flex agents. The machine will be putting a lot of kinetic energy (heat) into a very small surface area, and non-metallic panels are a poor conductor of friction induced heat and will tear / burn the paint system.

I've never seen a DA do that! I better start being more careful!!!

But it does look like it burned the clearcoat...

Possibly it could be wet-sanded and re-cleared.

Sorry this happened... beautiful car.

I would like to know more about the how much pressure, pad size, section passes (time), was applied.

Did this show up immediately or later?

That's terrible, sorry it happened but it's a good lesson to learn, it's a shame about the timing though... That's insane that it was a DA, too! How much less cut does SSR2.5 have compared to SSR3? I know with SSR3 you can easily feel the grit in between your fingers...

I learned this lesson about a month ago, but with a clear bra and a rotary, on a client's brand new 911 Turbo... :cursing::banghead:
I freaked out for about an hour, cursed and swore, and beat myself up over my stupid mistake! In the end, the detail was gratis and thankfully the client didn't even flinch when he saw the burn mark as he was planning on having the clear bra replaced anyways. It was a lesson well learned and one I hope to never repeat!

upon further reflection I am thinking maybe I didnt have enough product on the pad itself.

either way... it was an expensive lesson to learn.

I saw on one of my practice vehicles so I want to be sure I know what I did. In my case, one spot was on the roof against the moonroof area and I was doing little polishing on the roof.
