Tires?

After 64K miles. it's time to start looking for new tires (highway driving gives tires a longer lifespan).

I've pretty much narrowed down my choices to these three:

co_xtreme_contact_ci1_s.jpg

Conti Extreme Contact

bfg_traction_ta_hv_6r_ci1_s.jpg
BFG Traction T/A

gy_assurance_triple_ci1_s.jpg
Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread

My needs in a tire are fairly simple. I like to go fast, with an occasional high speed curve (no time for high wear "fun" stuff like Auto-X). I need good (higher speed) wet/snow traction. Last, but not least, I need decent tread wear.

I think I have some time left on the RS-A's, so I guess I'll do some more research

Any suggestions?

Don, I have the BFG Traction T/A on a 2000 Toyota Solara V6, and they are a very solid tire. Great traction in water and on the dry pavement. We don't see much snow, but I'd feel confident with them (driving catious, of course...). I would have to rate them as an excellent tire. They ride very smooth as well. They've got about 5,000 miles (the car has about 30,000) on then and you can still see the writing in the treads. They seem to be wearing very well. And they look great when dressed ;)

Check the Nov '03 Consumer Report test on all-season tires & they put Falken ZE-512's at the top.

I have 'em on my Accord & I can vouch for the wet weather handling & stopping as well as being very quiet.

I had 502's on my last car and thought they were great (the sidewalls were a bit soft though), in snow it was almost like having clawed tires. Only thing that stops me from getting them again without hesitation, is all the new tire technology out there.

Check out www.tirerack.com
They have good prices and they also test tires for traction, durability, ride, etc.
If you can't find exactly what you need on the web site, give them a call they know their products.
I have purchased at least 5 sets of tires for them with great success.

Just a thought.
What do you have on the car at this time? They must be doing something right for you to keep them for 64K miles.
That seems like exceptional treadlife, even with highway driving.
Ride, traction, noise must have been decent or you wouldn't have put up with them for that many miles. Might be a tire to consider again.

I have Eagle RS-A's on the car now, but I really liked the performance I got from the Uni-directional 'V' tread pattern on the Falkens I had before.

What did you settle on for Tires Don? How do you like them?

I'm considering the same the BFGs, the Tripletreds, the Falken and the Firehawk Indy 500. Too much excitement on wet pavement in my Tacoma on on my current Radial T/A's (straight Radial T/A not the Traction models or anything more advanced.)

Don,

If you got this many miles from the tires you have on the car now I would be looking at the same thing. On low profile tires that seems over the top to me for mileage. What kind are you running right now?

Best price I found was at http://www.vulcantire.com/ze512_t.htm

I run the same tires, my second set. I love them, falken is about the only tire that I care to run nowadays. I use to run toyos, but had problems with sidewall failure.

Right now I have Eagle RS-A (V rated) tires. I haven't been able to replace them yet, they aren't at the top of the list. My son's ferret Sniffles might need surgery for an adrenal tumor. Common, and cureable, but fatal if not treated, and since the tires still seemed to do OK this past blizzard (just a bit of rear end twitch once) I'm going to hold off until the ferret gets a clean bill of health.

I like BFG's G-force T/A KD. They hold the road very well but might not last as long as you like. My other choices would be Yokos or Falkins.

Only problem with the KD's is I need snow traction ;)

Hi Don...I don't know if this will help at all but I figured I'd let you know. It just so happens that we're in the same situation...have RSA's on the car and looking for a new set. I've been reading up and asking around for the past few weeks since I hope to get a new set before the years up. Basically my decision came down to the recommendation by our local tire center. 25 + yrs of service to my grandparents so I trust them! He said that the contiextreme contact was by his opinion the best tire going for one that wants dry/wet weather performance along with decent snow traction. However I will be purchasing them off of tirerack.com because that is the lowest price I can find. Also the mass amount of reviews on tirerack...1500+ i think...are pretty impressive. Hope this helps and PM me later on when you're closer to the purchase and hopefully I can give you a "driven on" review.

One of the salesmen at work has the Conti's on his Saleen and really likes them. He doesn't drive it snow so I can't comment on that. The BFG Tractions come on the 05 V6 Mustang and I can't say I'm impressed with them. They feel more like a highway tire than a performance one. My personal preference for performance tires are Cooper GTH's. I had them on my SHO for about 30k miles of hard driving and they only wore about 1/2 tread, the guy that bought my car works with me and they still look fine after 6 more months of driving. I stored it all but one winter and had Dunlop Graspic DS/2s? on it for that, and was able to not sacrifice much in agressivness. Just something you might consider not knowing your financial situation, you may want to run a dedicated winter tire and a dedicated summer tire. It's more expensive, but you aren't sacrificing traction in winter and performance in summer. My Focus I had went from the worst handling winter car to the best with just a swich to snow tires.
