Tipping

That'll buff right out!
I very seldom get tipped. That's fine. I like to think I do great work, at a fair price. Satisfaction Guaranteed, no questions, etc.

So, I just finished up three vehicles for a family (2nd time around). $600 Bill. He says, "Nice work.", and gives me $720 in cash! That's 20%!

This from a guy who says, "We treat our cars like Bic pens..."

:shocked  Wow, I wish my daily income hit that much!:xyxthumbs

Congrats!! That's always a nice way to really put meaning behind the "thank you!"

And like aj says
Not because it's extra cash, but because it let's me know the customer was extra satisfied with my work.

Don't you mean some months? If I'm not mistaken, you've had a pretty good one.

I believe tipping is so different for everyone. I can tell when someone gives me a mental tip. Back in the college waitstaff days, a mental or verbal tip made me mad. With a job I'm proud of, the tip can be in the form of an unavoidable smile from the owner. An extra 120 bones is an extra nice addition to the compliments, though.

You made the mistake of telling us. Now we'll expect you to guinea pig the FMJ with your winfall:D

20% tip....real nice! I get real nice tips at Christmas time but normally, when I do get a tip, it averages more like 10-15%. This past week though, one of my regulars suprised me. I wash his Cadillac DTS and Suburban on Thursdays and I charge him $60. He normally pays me $70 and for the last month or so, he started paying me $75. Well, this Thursday, he paid me $100, saying he knows how rough all the rain in February must have been on me. ;) Pretty nice of him....especially since he is a local sports talk guy and columnist (although ESPN had him on when A-Rod was traded for comment) and already gets me Ranger's tickets quite regularly.

It is really nice to be recognized and appreciated like that.

For the record, it took 2 full days...

I try to schedule 8 full details per week. March has been great, but February was really sad.

Same here. I am on pace to have the best month I have ever had (if the weather holds) but February was the worst month I've had in 4 years. Only one dry week the whole month, plus many days with lows near 20 so I couldn't start working until 11 AM or even later. :(

wow, 8 a week is alot. How do you get so many customers? How do you get the word out about your detailing business?

I know what you mean Jim. Very seldom do we get tips but when I do I splt it up between my staff that worked on the vehicle and donate a portion to the Human Society. I recently got a $30 tip for a paint touch up I did and donated it to the Canadian Cancer Society. I feel like tips are just gravy and I make enough money that I can send it to a worthy cause rather than buy something I'll forget about in 5 minutes anyway.

Wow... I was just going to ask a question about tipping and saw this thread so I figured I would just ask here.

I am thinking of getting my car professionally detailed this week (I have another thread in the detailing forum explaining why) and was wondering if tipping is normal and if so what would a good / average tip be.

I have no problems with tipping, but I never had a car detailed nor know anyone that has so this is still new to me and don't want to feel like (or give the impression) that I am screwing the detailer for not tipping as if I am satisified with the work and need his services again I want to make sure he knows I appreciate his work and doesn't give me the same treatment as I would normally expect because he thinks i'm cheap (I know that shouldn't be a factor in how someone does there job).

Thanks,

John

I tip service people if they do an outstanding job and I am truly happy with the service(s) provided. If the person is a professional he/she should not have their feelings hurt if you do not tip, they are still getting paid the amount of money that they feel is justifiable for their services. I for one do not think of people as being cheap if they do not tip me, is it nice to receive tips, yes, is it expected-no. And I certainly do not compromise the qualityu of a job because someone didnt tip me in the past, but sometimes I do go an extra mile in the future if I recieve a tip, because I know the person really appreciates the job I do for them and it is a way of saying thanks.

Absolutely correct. Having this attitude as a customer and as a company will pay off greatly to each.:bigups

I had a car over this weekend and the guy tiped me almost 90% :D

It was a blue Evo that was really swirled and just didn't look that great... at the end it looked like it should of when he picked it up brand new. It took a little longer than expcted, but he was just stuned with the results. Even before we started getting into the stuff that really enhances the shine, he was saying he couldn't believe his car could look like that.

Of course he was a friend so I only charged him for products, and probably charged way less than most people would... but it does feel nice to have someone who appreciates it that much. Makes you feel really good inside.

i believe in tipping when someone has gone beyond the boundaries of the job, or made their service more enjoyable to me
