Tipping

I get tipped occasionally, but more often than not I think that people here in Utah are not big tippers in any areas. I don't expect one and when I get one it's a bonus!

In a very rare instance I feel that a tip would have been "proper" and did not receive one. Example..... I got a call 8 am Sunday morning (I ALWAYS answer my phone) from a woman with an "emergency". Someone vomited all over over the back of her Tahoe and she could not even get in it because of the smell. I usually don't work Sundays but was there in a few hours and cleaned the truck til there was no evidence of the mishap. It was really gross. Now... she paid what I quoted her and was happy with the job, but in this instance I feel that showing up on Sunday morning w/out an appt. to clean vomit should have been more appreciated, ie: a tip. I was happy for the business and got paid for my time and I would never hold it against a customer for not tipping. But just between us here in this forum, I felt that even a small tip would have made it better.

I am sure that she had spent the bulk of her money on whatever alcoholic endeavour that produced that vomitous episode. I agree that a tip was more than called for in that instance.

To those tipping before the service is performed...

What do you do if the service is terrible, or the food is cold or has no flavor, or they spill a drink in your lap?

In my younger years I use to be a bartender and later bar manager with a steady stream of the same clientele at an exclusive club. I was amazed by the lack of tipping in an industry that pretty much lives off of tips.

One of my co-workers actually put up a sign in the bar after becoming very frustrated...

"Tipping is not a city in Japan".

I can honestly say this has never happened to me. My wife has sent food back to have it cooked a bit longer on maybe 2 occasaions in 13 years..... As for me, I send nothing back, I'm not chancing someone having a bad night and hockin a lougie in my food

I suppose if the service was that terrible I would get management involved and get a complimentary meal Da Rules!

Just yesterday actually I had a owner tell me a story of his childhood when a man came into his work and eventually asked him if he would like to take a ride in his new porsche sicne he was gawking over the car(this was in the 80s mind you) and about 10 miles down the road he offered to let him drive his new porsche!

Well, while letting Blackfire cure on his wifes car(going to be cleaning about 4 other of his vehicles) he asks if I have time to take a ride in his 400whp 94 3.8 turbo S! I of couse enthusiastically agreed. We ripped it down the interstate and he turned off and pulled to the side and asked if I would like to get behind the wheel! Of course!! Needless to say, he told me to punch it on the on-ramp and we were at 150mph before I knew it! Later that day, he gave me a very generous tip and I told him that letting me drive his beloved porsche was more than enough, but he still insisted.

BTW, I dont know if there is a better sound than a modded porsche with the sound of the turbo spooling echoing off the walls! :notworthy:

Very cool! Little things like letting you drive their car makes the owner becomes a little more of a friend with you rather than him being soley the customer and you the servicemen.

You want to build good relationships, friendships with your customers. The phrase "Hes my man" is something I always think about if one of my customers is talking to a me perspective customer.

Even just talking cars or engines with a new customer is a great way to let them know your a real person and not just a serviceman who comes and goes.

BTW there is a car that sounds better than a tuned Porsche Turbo S (even if it is air cooled)

Straight pipes on the F50.... I will be getting my hands on this one in a few months too!

I am of the opinion that a tip should never be refused-always graciously accept the offer.

In the heating/ac business tips are not that common-its an interesting phenomena, the same people who will put money in the jar at the donut shop won't even think of giving the service tech a few bucks for a coffee at 2:00am when its -15*F.

There is no better feeling than when you go to a Polish, Portuguese, or Italian household-the 'old' ones, and they ask you to sit and have a drink of their homemade stuff, wine of course from the Italians and Portuguese and rocket fuel, 'spiritus' from the Poles-the stuff is deadly-no higher honor can be bestowed upon you, its neat really.

Not related to tipping but its about being courteous and accepting of a gracious gesture.

When I was in CA with Bob we were taken to lunch at a very very fine Chinese restaurant, the man who took us there had his whole family with him and they were all obviously familiar with authentic chinese food and customs, me and Bob were not.

As their guest they bought me a fine Chinese beer and Bob too. Bob kindly accepted and had just a few sips to be polite, I however do not drink at all, forget the fact that I am not of age, I just choose to not drink at all.

I had an entire family (10ppl) staring at me to drink this beer and I kindly refused, I felt absolutely terrible but it was my principals vs their customs. Do whatcha gotta do. I did then get to drive Bobs truck all the way into SoCal on the highway... CA highways are great except for massive traffic!!!!

I appreciate the kind words, the truth is I just look at other peoples mistakes and live my life opposite what they do... miss out on the fun now, make up for it later in life whereas they live it up now and have a real hard time when reality sets in after college!

I'll be 18 in a few weeks, half my friends are in rehab, been to rehab or on their way to rehab very soon. The amount of drinking and drugs (anti despressants too = :chillpill:) has gotten out of control these days. I have seen my hare of f'ed nights, fights and other things... the only difference between my stories and everyone elses is that I have the ability to remember every single detail where most kids can only put random pieces together thanks to an alcohol induced daze. :out:

The best way I know how to stay focused on what I want to do is avoid temptation altogether, theres a lot I want to accomplish in my life. I started young and will bust my balls to get where I want.

Okay enough with me because this is actually a great thread... on boys :StarWars:
