Tinting Alternative?

It's illegal where I live to install any tint on the side windows. The law actually states that it's illegal to apply any substance to the windows. But it's occurred to me that a lot of vehicles come with "tinted" windows from the factory where the glass is actually colored rather than anything being applied to the window.

Having dark colored glass rather than a tint film would be legal, so I'm wondering if there are any aftermarket manufacturers that sell darkenned glass for various vehicles. I have an '85 RX-7.

Or failing that, is there any process that colours clear windows?

It's illegal in calgary to have tinted windows? another retarded law....

In vancouver it's only illegal to tint the driver and front passenger windows. any other window is tintable.

How do limos get around this crazy law if side windows can't be tinted?

I was not clear... By side windows I meant the driver and passenger front windows. We have the same law as in Van. Anything behind the driver can have any tint.

It is technically the same in CA (no tint on front, anything behind driver is okay) but the police don't enforce it. The problemi is, all you need is an officer who isn't having a good day and you got a ticket =\

yeah, and it's usually just a good idea to roll down your front windows when the cop comes up to you. even if they're not having a bad day and have pulled you over for something else, no reason to make it easy for them to find something wrong with the car

I'm wondering why more vehicles other than trucks, SUVs and vans do not at least make that factory type (almost stained glass sort of) window tint an option. My sunroof is tinted this way. I would have gladly went with the option to have permanent tinted side ( passenger only) windows. It shouldn't be too hard to exclude its availability at dealers in states/provinces that outlaw it.

I think it's DOT requlations. SUVs, truck and vans are treated different than passenger cars.

Well you'd think with the technology there someone would step up and make darker aftermarket glass and we could all have legal tinted windows. But I guess from what everyone's saying it just doesn't happen...

My Bro had tinted windows for about 3 years and they are a lot of trouble with the cops. Sometimes they'd pull him over for just being young in a sports car and then when they realized everything checked out they'd give him the ticket just to not look so dumb.

Also in an outlying rural area we have one cop who everyone calls "The Tint Nazi" and if he ever catches you he'll tow your car or you can take it off with his razor right on the side of the road - this was the fate of my Bro's tint. :(

Just curious, how dark was your brother's tint on the front?

I think a really light tint like 50% or even 75% (yes, this exists) might attract less attention, but still....
