Time to try another coating.....

Since Optimum has changed its product and policies, it has given me an excuse to try something else.

Things I liked about OC2.0:

-Ease of application

-Contaminant release, especially tar, I liked that I could go longer than a year without claying

Things I didn't like:

-Durability, after year two, things went downhill fast

-Looks.. there are none, it looks just like the paint underneath it.

I'm considering the following products but open to others:

-Cquartz, probably UK

-Duragloss

-DP (seems like the best value)

Thoughts?

On top of those listed above, Americoat actually looks good and is super easy to use. Haven't had a chance to see how it holds up yet. Bullet Proof is supposed to be super easy as well. 22ple has some new updated coatings too.

My impressions:

Cquartz darkens the paint. I (and others on other forums) don't like that. But you may be OK with it.

DG nano coating to me looks like Z-2 enhanced at the gloss level. I always liked the looks of Z-2 especially the newest versions. DG is also WOWA, a plus to me.

DP never used it.

Gtechniq, 22ple, gyeon I would at least read up on before deciding.

Dan, are you open to trying the Optimum Gloss Coat?

Don't waste your $$$ on Duragloss's Enviroshield.

I've been 110% pleased with Cquartz UK, especially when followed up with the RELOAD product.

Bullet Proof coating is extremely easy, slick, looks great and layers well.  Topper is nice (like a Reload for the coating)

CQ UK is VERY good as well.  The Original CQuartz has recently been updated to add durability and more hydrophobic.  Just ordered a bottle myself.

If you do decide to try the DG Enviroshield you can get it at Autoality for $35.  Haven't tried it, but some do seem to like it.

The Z-2 look is what makes it really tempting, but it really has a bit of a spotty track record.  I love the WOWA concept as well.

Not open to trying Gloss Coat, OC2.0 didn't last long enough in my book, I'd hate to do all that work for even less durability.  The price of it is insulting as well.

Why didn't you like Envirosheild?

Do you have a write up of applying Bullet Proof? I'm very interested in this coating and any application advice/experiences you have would be much appreciated.

CQ UK Edition or the new formulated CQ Classic. They've added titanium to CQ Classic and a few other things. They have also changed the application process.

DG makes a great coating, as all of their products. Hated CQUK as it changes the color of the paint. I'd look at Sonus ion product too.

I sure wish others had tried it.  Maybe something was wrong with the batch I have.

Tom-

I have a 'coating test' I'm conducting and Enviroshield is one of them.  On a side note, I have an interesting similarity to the result of your test but I'm want to make 100% sure my hunch is correct (and the similarity is NOT DG's new coating...if that makes sense.)

I'll make a post of my test as soon as find time to upload the photos.

Gabe, thanks for sharing this.  I'd like to have some confirmation of what I saw on my own car.  I generally have good confidence in Duragloss products.  This one has been sort of a fail :(

I did an application to the hood and fenders of another car a couple weeks ago...trying to figure out how to use up the stuff.

Will you PM me please when you do your write-up?  I'm anxious to see other (qualified) opinions on it.  Thanks.

Just used GlossCoat for the first time over some Suntek film on a Porsche 918. Ease of use, gloss and slickness are all top notch.

If you are a Detailers Club member at Autoality the price is very nice.

Try out the small bottle of UK since you are just wanting to test it or know what its like. I truly believe you will like it. I have clients that I have used this on their cars and are absolutely in love with it. The guys that don't want to drop the money on Finest opt for UK and are super pleased with it. It may darken the paint but its very slight and honestly the only time you will notice is when you do a 50/50 on the hood or door. Once the whole car is done, it is very hard to tell that the paint is darker. UK is not just looks, the coating works bad ass at making the car easier to clean, keeping it clean longer, and it just flat out works!

I tried Cquartz about 5 years ago and loved the way it worked, but hated the application. Over the years they have really worked at making it an all around awesome product. Now with UK and Finest, I have no reason to try any other coatings out there and the only reason they are in the same category with the other coatings is because of the word "coating". Other than that, the whole Carpro/Cquartz line is in a league of their own. Contact Corey at Carpro and get with the good sh*t LOL

P.S. Bryan that 918 is sick dude!

I don't understand why someone wouldn't want darkening? Not judging, just curious. When you get paint wet with water, it darkens it. People usually want that nice deep wet look, and the darkening has that effect IMO.

I just applied CQUK on my 2014 Dodge Ram this past weekend.    This was my first time applying a coating and it was not a total win like I hoped.

I washed, IronX, TarX, clay towel, polish with Reflect, Eraser Wipe down, apply CKUK, apply Reload, coat trim with DLUX, and coat tires with Tuf Shine.

When going to wipe off CQUK it can be very difficult to see what has been wiped and what has not been wiped.   My truck is white which makes this even harder.    I did my hood and it well pretty well.  Then did the two front fenders - not so good.   I thought I was getting it all, but some of the product remained on the paint.    I was not rotating the suede cloth enough so I changed my process.  I did the rest of the truck without issue although wipe off took much longer than I thought it would.   You wipe and wipe and wipe and wipe.  So much so I worry that I wiped off too much of the product and did not get a good layer of coating down.  I used 30ml on my Crew Cab Ram w/6'4" bed.

Next up was Reload.   What a pain in the butt this was.   Once again you wipe and wipe and wipe.   I tried small spray and spread and also load the whole panel with spray and wipe.   Using more (like the video CarPro posted) worked the best and I'm confident I got a good coat all the way around without smearing or streaking.   I will not apply or use Reload again because of all the effort.  The wiping is just crazy.  Too much effort for 4 months worth of durability.  I know it's only to protect CQUK while it is curing, but it has a nice slickness that CQUK lacks.   I expected better in that regard, but afterward I did find some others posted online that confirm the lack of slickness with CQUK.

DLUX was just awesome.   I used it on Trim and my exhaust tips.  Great stuff and I already bought some more.

Tuf Shine is awesome as well.   Application was simple to achieve great results.

So I too will be looking at a different coating for my other cars.   I feel pretty good that CQUK will protect my truck, but still just too much effort with all the wiping.  Especially on a big job like a full size truck.  I am going to try Polish Angel Invincible/Cosmic combo on another car and see how that goes.

Oh and I did not notice the darkening effect on white paint.  It may have darkened, but my truck is still bright white with a much more glass/reflective look to it than it had before.

Gloss Coat looks stunning and still does more than 3 months later on my own car. Only reason Optimum is saying 2 years durability is because it hasn't been tested long enough to see how durable it actually is.

I've used RELOAD a couple of times.  It never takes more than a 10  - 15 minutes to do the entire vehicle.

I'm wondering, did you let the CQUK sit too long before wiping?  If so, you would have a major PIA on your hands...
