Thought for the Day

[It is vital that young people, the guardians of our future, develop a strong awareness of the futility of violence and war. They can learn from the examples of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., that non-violence is the best way to ensure peace in the long term. Because the twentieth century was a century of violence, let us make the twenty-first a century of dialogue] Dalai Lama

[All compromise is based on give and take, but there can be no give and take on fundamentals. Any compromise on mere fundamentals is surrender. For it is all give and no take] Mahatma Gandhi

[Everyone who's ever taken a shower has an idea. It's the person who gets out of the shower, dries off and does something about it who makes a difference] -Nolan Bushnell

[All successful people men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose] Brian Tracy

[We are, you might say, “brainwashed” into thinking that money is the source of happiness, while what we really need to know is that inner peace is something that comes from within]-Dalai Lama

[Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can't practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage] - Maya Angelou

[Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat] - Theodore Roosevelt

[There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers] - Anon

I would add- the only stupid question is the one you did not ask...

[If a writer knows enough about what he is writing about, he may omit things that he knows. The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one ninth of it being above water] - Ernest Hemingway

OK two thoughts for today ;)

After all is said and done; it’s a shiny piece of metal with wax on it, nothing serious enough to cause a cataclysmic rift in the space / time continuum.

Timely quote, what with the HBO movie about him and Marty just having been released!

The way Hemingway left so much unsaid results in much of what he was trying to get across going right over the head of the "average reader", especially these days.

This is one reason why it can bug me when young students are required to read his work. Unless the teacher is *VERY* good (oh, get me going on that one  ) there's no way for them to appreciate the stuff, so it becomes just more "crap had to read in school, nothing all that great"; they carry that opinion through adulthood and lose out on much of what he had to teach us.

[Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for] - Epicurus

Ah, another one that resonates with me!

Epicurus is another sage who's been misinterpreted, misunderstood, and consigned to "crap from school". Sheesh, just look at the colloquial meaning of "epicurean"

Seems like these some of these quotations are 'cooking' up a storm with Accumulator ;)

Heh heh, well....yeah. Those two TFtD got me up on my soapbox about the way certain folks have been misinterpreted, misunderstood, and often even vilified by people who settle for, uhm...superficial processing.

[Even though your kids will consistently do the exact opposite of what you're telling them to do, you have to keep loving them just as much] - Bill Cosby
