Thought for the Day

The Old Grey Whistle Test

[My hope and wish is that one day, formal education will pay attention to what I call “education of the heart.” Just as we take for granted the need to acquire proficiency in the basic academic subjects, I am hopeful that a time will come when we can take it for granted that children will learn, as part of the curriculum, the indispensability of inner values: love, compassion, justice, and forgiveness.]Dalai Lama

That's a great thought, and I think it's something that has taken an increased focus lately (looking at the states that have passed anti-bullying legislation, for example) however in looking at the state of public education overall, it makes me wonder just how much we really take for granted -- or at least how much we truly value -- acquiring proficiency in basic academic subjects.

Seems education is always the first thing to receive budget cuts any time there is a shortage of cash, while entitlement programs continue to be funded. When are we going to realize that we're short-changing not only the next generation, but ourselves as well? We will have to rely on these people eventually to run things once we are too old to do it ourselves, yet we aren't actively seeking to equip them with as much knowledge as possible to ensure they are capable of doing it.

[In an increasingly interdependent world our own welfare and happiness depend on many other people. Other human beings have a right to peace and happiness that is equal to our own; therefore we have a responsibility to help those in need. Many of our world's problems and conflicts arise because we have lost sight of the basic humanity that binds us all together as a human family.] Dalai Lama

We are all, by nature, clearly oriented toward the basic human values of love and compassion. We all prefer the love of others to their hatred. We all prefer others’ generosity to meanness. And who is there among us who does not prefer tolerance, respect and forgiveness of our failings to bigotry, disrespect, and resentment?

Developing inner values is much like physical exercise. The more we train our abilities, the stronger they become. The difference is that, unlike the body, when it comes to training the mind, there is no limit to how far we can go

There is a saying in Tibetan that “at the door of the miserable rich man sleeps the contented beggar.” The point of this saying is not that poverty is a virtue, but that happiness does not come from wealth, but from setting limits to one’s desires, and living within those limits with satisfaction.

[It is important that when pursing our own self-interest we should be “wise selfish” and not “foolish selfish”. Being foolish selfish means pursuing our own interests in a narrow, shortsighted way. Being wise selfish means taking a broader view and recognizing that our own long-term individual interest lies in the welfare of everyone. Being wise selfish means being compassionate] Dalai Lama

Its sad to see these things but i see it. When i would go to job interviews for autobody helpers they would all say this.

And it is already happening in the auto tech field. I mean the good shops that really know what they are doing, U just dont see any good helpers, ill i see is older gentlemen( which leads me to believe in wiser judgment and trust, but no future aspect). And most of it is tru. regardless it hurts the trade educational experience.

I visited my local vocational school with my autobody instructor the other day to get a pick hammer and borrow stud welder. ONE of the most knowledgable guys that was an instructor for AUTO TECH was fired due to some new hot shot principal and replaced with some shy budget cuyt paper pusher that is too scared to show kids/adults how to get dirty with an engine. Most of the napa people that came up there for up to date clinics and demos will most likely try to shut this behaivor down. But its the shear fact that some of us students get royally screwed for this. This was not the first time i seen this happen it happens alot.

[The very purpose of spirituality is self-discipline. Rather than criticizing others, we should evaluate and criticize ourselves. Ask yourself, what am I doing about my anger, my attachment, my pride, my jealousy? These are the things we should check in our day to day lives] Dalai Lama

[When we are angry we are blind to reality. Anger may bring us a temporary burst of energy, but that energy is blind and it blocks the part of our brain that distinguishes right from wrong. To deal with our problems, we need to be practical and realistic. If we are to be realistic, we need to use our human intelligence properly, which means we need a calm mind] Dalai Lama

Even though I was a computer science major and loved ever computer class I had, the one I ended up getting the most enjoyment and fulfillment out of was Philosophy 101. I went it hating the class, but my views quickly changed. It ended up being the hardest and most rewarding 'B' I ever got.

Its too bad the class did not discuss anything about Dalai Lama. Excellent quotes and things to think about. :think2

[To help us bring benefit to others through our words and actions, it is useful to cultivate an attitude of sympathetic joy in others’ achievements and good fortune. This attitude is a powerful antidote against envy, which is not only a source of unnecessary suffering on the individual level but also an obstacle to our ability to reach out and engage with others]Dalai Lama

[If we can manage to refrain from harming others in our everyday actions and words, we can start to give more serious attention to actively doing good, and this can be a source of great joy and inner confidence. We can benefit others through our actions by being warm and generous toward them, by being charitable, and by helping those in need] Dalai Lama

[A lot of the problems we face are essentially man-made, so naturally as human beings we should also be able to reduce them. Natural disasters, of course, are in a different category, but according to environmental scientists even they may owe something to human behaviour. Therefore, if we are optimistic, take a longer view, and we employ realistic methods, we can contribute to making the world a better place] Dalai Lama

[When each of us learns to appreciate the critical importance of ethics and makes inner values like compassion and patience an integral part of our basic outlook on life, the effects will be far-reaching] Dalai Lama

[Although violence and the use of force may appear powerful and decisive, their benefits are short-lived. Violence can never bring a lasting and long term resolution to any problem, because it is unpredictable and for every problem it seems to solve, others are created. On the other hand, truth remains constant and will ultimately prevail] Dalai Lama

[Recognizing our human nature as beings whose happiness is dependent on others, we learn to open our hearts, and in so doing we gain a sense of purpose and a sense of connection with those around us] Dalai Lama

[Peace has a great deal to do with warm-heartedness and respect for the lives of others, avoiding doing them harm and regarding their lives as being as precious as our own. If, on that basis, we can also be of help to others, so much the better]Dalai Lama
