This is what happens...

Sorry to hear about this Andrew! Good thing they caught the driver!

My neighbour just picked up a Mazda3 about 6 months ago and had it parked on the street for 50 mins. He comes back and his rear door is smashed in. Turns out the people across the road backed up into the car and went straight to the paint shop. Little did the owner know, he left behind paint chips of his bumper. So my neighbour picked them up and showed them to the cops. The guy who hit my neighbour came home with a freshly painted bumper, but didn't sand down where the paint had chipped off. But here's the best part. The cop came to the person's house (they live in a basement) and nobody answered. So the cop went up to the landlord and they handed the cop the key to the basement. The cop walked in, found the guy, slapped him with 6 points, careless driving charge, leaving the scene of an accident charge, and a nice hefty fine.

Had something similar happen to one of my parent's cars when I was in Jr. High School. Try if you will to picture a 1971 Ford LTD Country Squire Station Wagon and how big those rear quarter panels are, imagine being able to climb inside the car from the rear quarter. The car was parked on the street and during the night someone sideswiped it and it took the rear quarter completely off from the rear taillights to the rear doors. I would hate to see the other car as that LTD was a tank and it had to be a pretty bad impact to do that kind of damage. It was a hit and run though, they never found the person who did it. Fortunately we were able to get it fixed.

For those who are too young to imagine a '70s era car here is an image of a 1972 which is pretty much identical :)

:LOLOL I had to drive that same huge, fake wood trimmed POS when I was in high school. 400 cubic inch, 2 barrel carb. Ugh.

Well, as much as that sucks...I'm sure glad you weren't in the car. It's crazy how stupid some people can be. My buddy's jeep got hit infront of his parents house a few years ago, but it didnt do near as much damage. Sorry ya have to go through that.

That sucks. I hope it works out ok for you with the insurance company.

Some people need to be severely punished for their actions...:grrr :grrr

Yup, my dad handed it down to me when I was in High School. It was fun from stop light to stop light. My memory is probably a bit foggy but I seem to recall ours having a 4 barrel carb. I could be wrong though as it was a long time ago... I used to flip the air cleaner lid over all the time and my dad would flip it back, we used to go back and forth on that :) I had flashes of Autopian behavior even back then with that car though, I cleaned that engine well enough that you could probably eat off of it...

Glad to hear they found the person responsible, but I would be lucky to get even a cent out of them after months in small claims court. That's the terrible thing about our legal system and uninsured drivers.

Years ago when I was in high school my Chevy Caprice Stationwagon was rear-ended in my driveway. The drunk driver had sideswiped my brothers '78 T-bird that was parked on the street... which snapped his cv axle causing him to veer severely to the right... into the back of my car in the driveway. His little Geo Metro was totaled after hitting those two steel boats, but that still didn't stop him from trying to put it in reverse to separate his car from my bumper to leave the scene.

Police were called, he blew a 4.0 (yeah, that's not a typo), no damage to my car, and my brother only got $300 from him after a year in the courts.

You're probably right. Chances are that if they don't spend money for an insurance policy, they don't have any money if you sue them. Even if you get a judgement against them.
