Similar story here- my Dad's second wife was the original owner of the '84 Volvo I've often referred to here. She was told by the salesman that you "don't need to wax the special Volvo paint". She occasionally ran it through a carwash and wiped it with snow during the winter to "wash" it. First time I saw it (four years old then) you can imagine what I thought ( :scared ) so I got out the Cyclo and fixed it up. Dad was very happy (he didn't like having a crappy looking car around his place) but she was *furious* with me for "mistreating" her "perfectly well cared for" car Went so far as to say I oughta take the wax off (Dad vetoed *that* idea). By the time I inherited the thing years later it was quite a project, but by the time I gave it to my wife's niece (just a few weeks ago), you could've shown it Only 73K miles, too.
