I'll figure it out....
I had some free time on my hands so I cleaned up my dad's car and finished up mine for the weekend. I have a potential client to see on Sunday, so i figured I'd spruce up my car a bit.


So I washed the car with the PB Low foam sample. Very nice stuff. It does creat a lot of suds initially, but then the suds die down a lot. After i did the car, I tried it on the wheels and tires. A little agitation with a wash mitt, and the wheels were pretty good to go. Finished off with some BNB diluted 50/50.

Next, i decided to clean up the trim a little. I got some polish and wax on the trim when I was messing with the car earlier this week. Got the Mr Clean Magic Eraser to take care of the mess real good. This is before the eraser.

A better idea of it's capabilities. The residue you see has been on the car for almost more than a year now, but it came right off. One warning though about this product- do not let it touch the paint as it will scratch it. Either cut a small piece of the eraser to use, or tape off the painted surfaces.

Feeling a little better about the way the car was looking, I decided to try something new. Earlier this week, I did the hood, as well as the rest of the car. However i did not get as crazy on the side panels as I did the hood. For the left side I did ssr1, pwc, and EX. On the right side, i did just pwc, and Ex. i did this primarily to get an idea of how each looked. The left side did llook a bit slicker while the right side looked a bit darker. Today I topped the entire car with cmw.

I should have known something was wrong when i started with cmw on the roof. The roof was the only part of the car that got minimal attention for the week, so i expected it to be grimey. Although, cmw is not suppossed to have any cleaning ability, it managed to pull a lot of gunk off the roof. And it did not apply smoothly. Just like EX I found myself varying the amount of product to help make application easier. Theonly thing that seemed to work ok was applying a lot. This helped go on better. Aplication was also bad on the rest of the car as well. Usually wit WG, it takes me about 20 minutes to do the entire car by hand. CMW took almost twice as long.

Since I wanted the wax to haze (and my arms were a bit tired), I decided to give my new vac a try. In all honesty, I have to say that I really do like it. Now I know i read somewhere that it could be used as a blower, but I did not see anywhere that this would be possible. No biggie since I rally never tried blow drying my car. This thing is also very quiet- a lot quieter than the Ridgid 4 gallon I had previously. I also found the suction action of this machine to be a lot stronger, which was another plus. But then it got me thinking about the Ridgid. See the Ridgid is reported to have a static lift of 55' through a 1 7/8 hose. The Fein model I have has static lift of 90' through a 1 1/4 hose. I could be wrong, but if one were able to neck down the HOse on the Ridgid to accomodate a 1 1/4 hose, it may be able to equal or exceed the suction power of the Fein. Loudness of the Ridgid would be the real compromise, but if you can live with it, it might be the more cost effective solution. Also, be advised that Ridgid is phasing out just selling the 4 gallon by itself- you;ll have to pay for the wall mout kit, which raises the price. If you can locate the vac and it's accessories by itself, then jump on it. And then when you have time, see about getting an adapter to allow you to neck down to the 1 1/4 hose size ( as it turns out, the 1 7/8 hose size is not a very popluar size, and there are not nearly as many accessories available for this size as there are the 1 1/4 or 2 1/4 hose sizes).
Finally, the wall mount kit has the sound deadener (yeah, right) bolted onto the vac, so you'll need to get a small hex key to remove that peice if you want to use the vac as a blower.

As for me, I too tired to make any more exhchanges, so I plan to stick with the Fein. It's small, quiet, and still provides good vacuuming power for it's size.

After I did a little playing around with the vac. I wiped down the car. The pic doesn't show it, but in the light, it was looking mighy good. During my trip back to Home Cheapo to return the 4gal, I took a another look at the car under the store lighting. It looked real nice and wet. I even got some nods of approval from some of the folks at the store. Unfortunately, I did not have any cards to give out. And i did not think to bring the camera with me to take any shots under the store lighting :mad:

And then Night fell......

I figured I had to get a few shots of the car at night, so I headed for a large parking lot in my area. The lighting was not nearly as harsh as the lighting elsewhere which makes what I show next bizzare. In any case, while I took the pics, i noticed that the car seemed to have some hazing in spots. As I got closer, it began to look more and more like nasty swirls. But when I touched the paint, I could see some smearing...

WTF?

In this pic, what you are seeing is hazing from the wax. I coulda sworn I wiped it all off. In every kind of light, even in direct sunlight, I didn't see anything like this ..

Now, I've used cmw before, and I can't recall ever seeing anything like this before, even when the wax was applied heavy. I am now wondering if maybe I did not allow for enough time for the EX to cure, or maybe there is some incompatability there.

Saturday night, when I have time, I am going to go over the car again and see if I can correct this.
 
Just a thought, I've read that excessive moisture in the air (quite likely if dew was starting to form in the night) can cause some products to "re-haze." I think that all it takes is another wipe with a qd and it should be fine. This is just what I've read, though.
 
I've noticed that after a polishing/waxing that when evening comes around especially if it's humid) sometimes dew starts to form on the car in the exact pattern as either the buffer or the MF towel I used to remove the haze.
 
I've had the same problem the last two times I've used EX. Tiny white specs all over the hood and hazed spots of wax on several places (a day later) on the car. My hood looked just like yous! I have no idea why this happens but it's driving me crazy.
 
I understand about the humididty and dew, but thing is, humidity was low last Friday, and the work didn't really start until after 2 or thereabouts. It's really odd, in daylight, the car look looks good. Even during the night shots, the car looks good. It's just those darn hazy bits of mess that's got me bent out of shape.

I don't know, I'm thinking maybe I'll strip it all off and go back to using a wax or go with the WG or matbe PPG.
 
During the early evening hours, I will sometimes see things that look like streaking or leftover product on my vehicles. For me, this is more of an environmental issue (changing humidity levels, rather than just high humidity in general) than a specific product related situation. I've seen it happen with dozens of different sealants and waxes. There were only two instances where hazing or streaky spots appeared and wouldn't go away. Both instances involved multiple layers of Klasse SG with an S100 topper. I could never pinpoint the cause behind the hazing, but the problem never recurred once I changed my procedure for topping with carnauba. I wait at least one week between the last layer of a sealant and the first layer of a carnauba wax.
 
usdm are you saying that the regular 5 hp 4 gallon Ridgid is better than the ProVac setup? For what you get I think its actually better value wise. What do you suggest?
 
I Just used Ex-p and the next morning there were white specs all over the hood and fenders. And i kept it in the garage over night.. HUMMMMM

I don't know ProVac is so I can't comment on the brand or any models. Can you give me an idea of what you're talking about?

Provac comes with the wall mount basket, additional hose (at least mine did), the bolted on diffuser (which I still think does not really help with noise reducttion), extention pipes, a standard nozzle and a slightly smaller nozzle. It also comes with a price tag of around 90.00 bucks. The regular vac come without the bolted on diffuser, basket, pipe extentions, and additional hose. It does come with a crevice tool, standard nozzel, and the slightly smaller nozzle (I think it's for upolstery). It comes with a price tag of about 60.00 bucks. Removal of the diffuser will kill the warranty also I found out.

I suspect that folks will remove what the want out of the Provac box, and simply return the rest for refund. Because I still had to buy an additional set of nozzles since mine did not come with what I wanted. So besure to check the box immediately if you can so you have everything you need.

Don't get me wrong, I think the 4gal vac is pretty good. But for me it was too noisy (even with the diffuser) and at the time, i did not feel that it had any better suction that the small Oreck XL I have sitting in the house. But once again, I think that the suction power could be improved if one were able to neck down the hose to the 1 1/4 size. And if you want, you could get the diffuser seperate. This would make it a good cost effective option over the Fein, albeit without the quietness.

Well, I went back out to the car today. Got some Final inspection and proceeded to wipe off the haze. Just lighly misting it on, I couls easily see where there was still residue on the paint. Wiped it all off with a mf towel. When I finished I gave it a look, and was happy......until I went back to the parking lot. I'm not sure what happened, but the paint now looks a lot duller, and I can see a lot of scratches. And the hood looks worse now than before I started messing around with the car several months back. Damnable thing about it is I deliberatly tried to apply very light pressure, and changed clothes several times to insure I did not scratch the paint. Or maybe, just maybe, the Final Inspection did short work of the CMW and EX. So now I have no clue what the hell happened::wall

Truth be told, I did like the look that the EX/ CMW combo did for the car. But for all the hassle, I can't justify doing this to any other car save my own, and I doubt i will suffer myself to go through this ordeal again.

Looks like I'm going to have to strip it all off, and start from scratch. Have to do it tommorrow at the shop, cause I don't have an extention cord available anymore :mad

Okay cool thanks for the info! Home Depot does have some goodies there! Grabbed an 18v Ryobi for 30 bucks there. Excellent buy in my view!
 
Yeah, Home Cheapo is a good place (if you have access to the big facility- the smaller ones tend not to have all the real cool stuff).
Thar said, I plan to go there or Sears for a 1000w work light. The Flourecent ceiling lights in m garage aren't cutting it, and I figure the lights will be useful when I work outside of my dad's shop, or away from my garage.
 
Sears has an 1000w work light for 19.98 online, but no clue if its actually at the store. Shipping is a pain
