The Ultimate Shopping Cart (Comments/Suggestions)

I am basically starting up my car detailing supply collection from scratch. I don't have anything besides some sponges and crappy soap right now. The only thing I plan on buying at the store are a couple of buckets. I want the best shine money can buy within reason (no $2k waxes :p). For right now, I'm focusing on the exterior so the only interior product I chose was the 303 protectant. Please tell me if I am missing anything or if some products need to be changed for better alternatives. The car does not need any major paint correction but it does have a good amount of swirls on it.

PLEASE CHECK THE LIST IN POST 10

That's what I have so far. I only made a shopping cart on Autopia, I didn't try it on any other sites. Do you guys think I should go through all the other detailing sites and do the same thing or should I just stick with my Autopia shopping cart? Do the other sites have better brands, like alternatives to Sonus? I'm inclined to stick with Autopia because of this really nice 20% off coupon that I'm pretty sure the other sites don't have. Thanks for any help you guys can give me!

:thx

P.S. - I am actually posting this for a friend of mine. I already have a small detailing supply collection of my own but nowhere near this fancy.

What sort of car does he have? That will determine whether you might need a more aggressive compound/polish product

MF Towels?

I figureed the ones that come with the kits would be enough. Maybe I'll just throw a few more in there for multi-purpose stuff.

It's in there.

He has a 2003 Mustang Cobra in blue. It's a summer car so I don't think it needs anything more aggressive but I'll let you be the judge. He doesn't really know anything about washing so he used a sponge with 1 bucket and some car soap as his car wash routine. He says it has lots of swirls in the sunlight.

I'd skip the Sonus SFX polishes. Just my dos pesos. You can do MUCH better.

What polishes from Autopia would you recommend instead? Should I go to another site and make a shopping cart with different brands instead of Sonus?

I'd recommend Megs, Menzerna, 3M, 1Z....can't really go wrong with any of those.

^So you're saying I should go to other sites to make my order?

Do you guys think I should stick with the Klasse sealant glaze I have now or get a Carnuba wax instead? Maybe I should just skip the wax/sealent part and go buy some NXT 2.0 instead?

Update on the cart: I also added another bottle of Sonus Acrylic Spritz and the Der Wunder Towel Trio.

I'm saying I would get your polishes somewhere else, and perhaps the rest of your stuff here. I always buy from Autopia every chance I get.

Let me know what you guys thing. All comments and suggestions are appreciated!

You might want to add some 4" pads and a smaller bp for the PC as well as a good APC. Not sure if I'd go with the lambswool pad or not.

Don't overlook the Surf City line. Their glass cleaner, grime destroyer and tire dressing are great products.

The Edge 2000 pads don't use backing plates as far as I know so I didn't add any to the list. What is an "APC"? I probably don't need all colors of the 4" pads, which colors should I go with if I decide to get some? Why shouldn't I go with the lambswool pad? Is Surf City available on autogeek.net? I'm trying to keep the entire order on one site.

you might look at getting 2 green or orange edge 4" pads and then 2 white edge 4" pads. The rest of the stuff seems okay (better to have them at the ready then to wait on Post Office or UPS). I only have the optimum line of compound and polish, they are very newbie-friendly (work in sun and long working time). Others like Menzerna, 1Z, megs have their devoted following as well. You can't go wrong with any of this group. Be prepared to spend a lot of time correcting if you don't start with the 4" pads first. It took so long with the UDM (with 5.5" edge pads) on my impala that I went ahead and got the rotary to speed things up. You might want to get more MF's as well, you would be surprised how many you go through detailing. Good luck and welcome to autopia.:waxing:

What do you mean? Why would it take more time with the big pads than with little ones? Maybe I should get the opposite of what I have now and buy 1 of each color 4" pad and a few large pads of the important colors.

The buffer can cut harder with the smaller pads. As the buffer slows down as the surface tension increases.

So by using a smaller pad you can get more cut before the buffer slows down. So even though you have to work in smaller sections its actually quicker to use a 4inch pad.

So i'd get a few cutting pads in 4inch and a few cutting pads in 6inch. The 6inch pads even if they are the same colour will have less cut than the same 4inch pad.

I also find you often go through more cutting pads than polishing and finishing pads. As applying a glaze requires a quick pass, where making a dozen passes with a strong compound will wear out the pad quickly.

Just forget the pc and get the flex 3401vrg as it has so much more power and will do correction in half the time without the repeated steps the pc will require.

And it costs A LOT more... Keep in mind that neither my friend or me have 0 experience with buffers. More power=potential trouble.

a 3401 is so expensive though, its a great machine but too much $ IMO. For that price you can buy a PC and rotary (which will work even faster than a flex DA).

Usually they won't take the 10% off of polishers/buffers, that might be what's going on
