The Ultimate 1-Step Showdown!

OK Todd you sold me. My next 1 step polish is going to be BF. Very good review, I was surprised with many of the results.

Incredibly well written review Todd. Thanks for taking the extra time when putting your reviews together. They clearly show the time involved.

I have always had good luck with SSR1..well until I broke the bottle and my garage floor got it...but there are no swirl marks on my garage floor ;)

In my experience, yes and no...

I mean, I have never tried a polish that didn't behave differently based on the method and type of application. That pad is a very integral part of the polishing process. I have removed sanding marks quickly with M105 then, by using a method I have posted to this forum, achieved a high-gloss finish on black paint. Obviously not all polishes will have this extreme degree of versatility, but it the example is true with most products.

That said, some products seem to have more dependence on pad selection. I have, for years, tried to figure out the reason/formula/ingredients that would affect this category. To the best of my knowledge and testing, products that use more chemical cutting agents (solvents) tend to rely on the pad more for performance than products who rely more on abrasive content.

Todd for a one step... cant you use a really light cutting polish but change the pad for example sf4500 and like a orange cutting pad?

Yes. However the mechanical ability of the orange pad could override the finishing ability of the polish, leaving you with very faint micro-haze. There are so many variables, but generally when doing a one step polish you want to use the MOST aggressive pad that will not leave any haze. So ultimately, it depends on the paint you are using and it is a reason why a test spot is so important.

Thanks Todd. Very interesting test. Has inspired me to try a test like this with my common choices of polishes and compounds. Think instead of any of us recommending you try product X, Y, or Z we should all do our own test and post it. Will be looking a test track/panel ASAP. :)

hey todd, how about an "ultimate rupes 1 step showdown"

same pad, same product, different rupes ?

i am by no means an expert but from my time with the duetto alone and the yellow rupes pad/gel...i'd have to give this my thumbs up for a great 1 step..the cut is pretty considerable (especially if you look at as a 'fine' polish) as i've illustrated in some pictures and finishes very nice as well
