The Super Friends club

JC, you've expressed a very interesting observation :bigups that led to many forums crumbling and splitting up.

This kind of "situation" exists in any private and govt organisations around the world, any clubs and any club forums. It's prevalent in almost any office environment:hand:

There are bound to be many KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) who've been around for a long time within any forums, and he/she could be perceived by many other members as the authority within that forum.

It might or might not be true.

Note: Many Asian-based car forums even call these KOLs as "sifus" aka "masters".:yawn1::yawn1:

Similarly, in any organisation, there's bound to be prominent old-timers who're respected and held in high regards by other newer employees. That KOL might or might not be competent. The important thing is, time has given this person a certain level of respect and envy from others.

If a new employee to that company feels sore about it, it could be either due to low self-esteem, jealousy and a desire to be a somebody in that organisation. He/she yearns to look for respect and recognition but so far, has not achieved that.

In a Honda car club forum where I'm very active in, I regularly see this kinda behaviour:

There were a few individuals who're the KOLS..whether they acknowledge it or not, it's very clearly seen by any newcomer. That's life. Then, there are the silent lurkers who're just circling the camp:peep: , sizing up who's who within that camp, assessing the KOLs competencies, quietly absorbing any good piece of info and feel that they themselves are just as good or better than the KOLS within that camp.

IMO, everyone has different solutions to one situation.

That's the beauty:bigups

I don't give a damn about Group Dynamics cos WTHell!!!...I hv never even met these experienced and skilled members. I'm just behind my PC in another country, and willing to help if I can.

That is a very well put. It comes down to this, in every facet of life there are people that will ***** and moan about the way "the game" is played. How unfair this is, how skewed that is. Then there is the other type that just plays the hand they were dealt, as well as they can. It's not hard to figure out who wins.

Me too Justin. I haven't been here since day one but the time I have spent here I would call worth it. I think there are some very good detailers here that are in the top 5% and those guys get a lot of respect from others. Does this make them elitist? Well, I've never felt that way. I know they're busy but they always took time to help me out.

Just what would make an "elitist"?

The cars you work on?

The clients you have?

The income you make?

Or most of all, YOUR SKILLS?

I don't care if you work on a Neon for 12 hours or a Lambo for 2....it's the skills and I'm not just talking detailing skills. What about business skills? Who here would like 5 Neon details to one high end detail? I would.

I really dont think it matters. If there is a super friends club, then that's fine, the people on this forum who chat outside of the forum will likely be better friends and defend each other. I will defend J.C. Too because he is a great guy and great detailer.

Personally I am just glad that so many on this site share their knowledge, expertise, and experience. I consider it my responsibility to sort this information and apply it in my own situation. Navigating this site using the search function, reading many discussions, and observing interaction among members makes it fairly easy to distinguish professionals, enthusiasts, beginners, etc.

Remember that many here have experience and skills for detailing but not necessarily communication and writing skills. It is very easy to misinterpret someone's true meaning, attitude, or intention from reading responses on these forums. Writing thoughts is more difficult for some than others. Often people try to use words that don't express the meaning intended when written or that they can't properly spell. However, this doesn't mean that the statement is not helpful to others or that it carries a condescending attitude.

In my years at this site it seems that the vast majority are here to either learn or share without hidden agendas. I appreciate that and hope it continues.

Happy New Year to everyone.

With less than 500 posts, it doesn't seen you've ever come around much in the first place. Ostracizing yourself from Autopia could certainly be affecting your opinion I hope you realize.

I don't want to say anything other than this: Just because someone has a low post count doesn't mean they don't come visit the site often/everyday and read. I wish most of the places I visited online didn't publicize post count, because the people that post counts mean a lot to are a lot of the times the people who don't need to be posting in the first place.

EDIT: Not directed at you personally or anything - so please don't take it that way. Just wanted to off-hand post what I think about post counts. I just happen to visit some places where guys will post-just-to-post in efforts to establish themselves via post count and then offer average-or-below advice when the opportunity presents itself.

Happy New Year to everyone.

I am one of those that come here everyday since I joined many years ago, looking to gain knowledge from other peoples questions I never thought of asking. You could say I am the silent majority, a shade tree mechanic, not a professional, I just like making the family vehicles look as if they are being judged at a car show every week.

The Legion of Doom is a group of supervillains led by Lex Luthor that appeared in Challenge of the Super Friends, an animated series that starred superheroes from DC Comics.

In each episode that they appeared, the Legion of Doom would enact various plots against the Super Friends, only to be met with defeat by the end of the story. Often, however, they would escape capture through a last-minute escape plan.

I'm in the super no friends club too, but I think it's because no one wants to come join me in our -40 degree F weather, haha

There's totally a Super Friends club on Autopia. For a short period of time I thought it would be worth while trying to join the Super Friends club(think of it as a new member's ignorance). Then I realized that it's a requirement that you go homo for the other members before you can join and decided it wasn't for me.

I make this thread not because it makes me bitter. It's more of a "gag" reflex. I know for a fact that I am not the only one who notices it as at least 2 others have mentioned it to me, as well as being eluded to by others openly.

No one's being called out specifically. But, so you know, folks clearly pick up on the elitism and I don't think it's healthy for the community.

**I rarely come around anymore because of this specific reason. I left the "need" for cliques in High School.**

I gotta admit, this is a pretty strange thread! I can't help but take it as a personal attack on the people who use this place for personal enjoyment. I'm sorry that you feel threatened here by the people that like participating that you are hesitant to join in. From my knowledge nobody has ever told you not to post your opinion (I actually encourage it!), but if you choose not to that only makes this or any forum for that matter weaker. Growing thick skin if part of the learning and entertainment process. Don't think that just because someone is opinionated and passionately knowledgeable about something doesn't make them an elitist. Again, sorry you feel this way because I like you and your posts and would really like it if you continued making a lot more of them.

If you thought I had a bad attitude and you mentioned it, would that mean you feel threatened by me? *I would hope not*

In the same light, posting my thoughts on an attitude some have has nothing to do with being threatened. I get maybe 4~6 jobs a year from Autopia and none of them come on referral from anyone else. My business has been built on reputation, results and direct client referrals. Not referrals from other pros. "Threatened" is not the right word.

Here I am posting what I believe to be a self-check reminder, which I think can make the community tighter. ...here I am *posting*. If folks want more posting, it may not always be about how awesome and perfect everything is.

Hey JC - I think your posts are pretty good and thoughtful. Please remember, a lot of guys come on here and try to soak up as much info as they can to be a better detailer. Guys like you with experience and writing skills help out. I understand that not everyone has time to post on every thread and that's probably a good thing! But, you add value and that's always appreciated. Take care man and lets make 2011 a better year!

BTW - Happy New Year everybody!
