The Real Dealership Tire Shine

Basically, all the dealers in the Metro Detroit area choose to only purchase all their supplies & chemicals (everything from paper clips to motor oil) from 1 distributor (Metro Jobbers). MJ buys from the manufacturer in huge bulk @ a low price and sells it to each dealer for retail. Each dealer principal sits on the board of MJ and gets a 10% return check $$$ personally (kickback) at the end of the year for the MJ products they buy. Sometimes, this could be several tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, just by shopping with MJ. Vesco/Carbrite(Wizards is sold by Vesco) & 3M are the only detailing vendors on the MJ "approved list". If you buy products from Auto Magic or Sam Brown, you don't get the 10% return check and that's why most dealers don't use them. It's kinda a mafia of dealerships in a way.

if you're still interested i used 4 stars tire and trim guard today on my tires and it's totally different than anything i've ever used. it's actually a rubber and vinyl sealer. it's got the consistency of water not at all greasy, i applied it to a clean dry tire and in a few minutes it was dry and ready for another coat, it can be layered to the level of shine you want. it even masde the tire blacker looking, water beads off, it does'nt wash off with deyergent, i'm sure eventually it will, but the durability, i'm told is weeks. granted it's 40 bucks a 12oz. spray bottle, but you use so little of it per spray, and you don't have to use it everytime it rains or you wash your car. definitely worth the money imo.

All dealerships use the same purple, grape-smelling stuff.

I use purple, grape-smelling stuff, too - except it is Meguiar's branded, and is quality stuff! :getdown

Hey fellas, I understand that many of you feel my comment about best of the best from dealerships was stupid. I made that comment only on the fact of how my tires looked because I honestly believe that the dealership did a great job on the tires. I do like many products sold at local automotive stores, but it is just hard to find a product that can duplicate the same shine I had on my tires the first time I saw them. That's all.

Your comment wasn't stupid. It's just blasphemous around here to mention that you liked something from a dealership. Your best bet is to go back and ask someone at the dealership. There is no set standard of 'dealership' products, per se.

The elusive tire dressing may be made by an American company called Granitize. They make a ton of automotive, marine, and aviation products.

The automotive line includes Xzilon, one of those over hyped 3 or 5 year paint protection schemes they sell for huge bucks. It stands to reason they may use other products by the same company.

Within the tire care line, they make 3 products, water based through to oil based. T5, T6 and T7 are the actual names.

The local Honda dealer, the largest in town, uses T7.

A family member was in the accounting dept. of that dealership for a few years and has since moved on. She ordered me a gallon.

Like all dealerships I'm sure, this one appeared to be very high end to the public, but did all it could to save a buck behind the scenes.

She once asked me if I'd like a free detail at the dealership - she'd arrange it for me. I smiled and thanked her for the thought and declined graciously.

I use to work at a place that made detailing products. ALOT of dealerships here in NOVA used our tire shine. Reason being, they can buy it by the drum (55gallons) and its alot cheaper. Also, it shines really nice and it's not too messy with a little wipe and the shine last a while and smells great.

yep thats what I use. First I spray on Bleach White then scrub it off before I wash my car, then I put that on afterwards. You can get both at autozone. I dug up some pics from my car at the dealership the day I picked it up brand new fresh off the truck and then some from a few months ago. I don't have very good pics of the tires at the dealer but they are the same set of tires, the car is a little over a year old in the pics. And the meguiars def. flings MUCH less.

^^ looks good!

but i gotta admit with the OP. When I first got my car brand new from the toyota dealership the shine on the tires was awesome! I didnt notice any fling or splatter on the rims and the shine lasted forever. So far with all the products ive tested none have come close in endurance.

do you guys not get that he really isnt serious???? I dont think he really needs an answer to his rhetorical question

why would he not just call the dealership and ask...why take a full day NOT to get the answer, and even if someone did say the correct answer, he and you, wouldnt even know it....

I agree, I liked my tires the best when my car was new from Toyota (Scion tC).

But honestly, I think it has to do with having BRAND NEW TIRES first. If they put the same product on tires that had at least 2,000 miles on them, I bet it wouldn't look as great.

That's just what I'm thinking now, though.

However, with that said, I remember that in my earlier detailing days, I tried putting the Meg's gel on a brand new tire on another car - and it really didn't want to go on at all. It was like new tires have some sort of additive that repels stuff like that.

That was before I discovered the AA Foam "pre clean" method, though, and as such, never really got really good dressed tires.

^^

I get what your saying, but then again Ive gone through 3 sets of tires already and they still done shine like when I first bought the vehicle.

New tires have mold release on them. This is frequently a silicone-based product that is used to keep the tire from sticking to the mold during vulcanizing.

If you are going to use dealership tire dressing, do it right. Glob it on so it slings down the sides of the car and make sure you spray it all over the rims too.
