The plastidip rave...

I am definitely going to have to research this. Could be a nice add-on service for the younger crowd, and possibly a way to stay super busy in the winter too. I see possibilities in this.

When you remove this product does it leave any marring or residue on the paint?

I assume you probably need to clay + alcohol wipe before spraying this on...

My thoughts exactly...sounds like a pretty simple add on service that a few people every year would be interested in. Even more so a type of market I deal with...I could see a lot of benefits to selling this to them.

What kind of spray gun and pressure is required?

Interested as I will be taking the Bird on a road trip later in May and those old flip up headlights, single stage used in 77, doesn't like bugs or road rash.

May be a way to keep the front end from getting ate up on the trip.

you dont want to do something that people want to pay you money for???? I would jump all over this! charge more than your normal rate since there isnt much competition around...say $60/hr plus materials! thats an extra $200 per day vs back breaking labor in detailing! hmmmm

You should be able to find it at local hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.

so its a temporary protective coating that you peel off later?

the clear stuff has been out for years and is cheap but maybe its an older formula.

I always have at minimum done a Degreaser wash (CG or 3D) and an IPA wipedown. Just figuring it is common sense to allow the product to adhere to the paint and have the paint be free of any trace of an LSP.

It is temporary in the sense you can peel it off. However, I have had wheels I sprayed and the customer still has them going on 8 months now with no peeling. So it is definately durable. You cant scrub it, and I am sure a high pressure washer close to it would peel it back, so there is a common sense aspect to it. However, normal road wear doesnt break it down.

If you go to dipyourcar.com you can buy a kit with gallons dip and thinner. You can do it by the cans but it takes a lot. My good friend did his whole cts with 12 cans and it was still too thin. When it is too thin it looks like *** and peels easily from abrasion. I plan on doing the dark grey on my golf soon. There is money to be made with this. Best of luck!

I would agree it probably looked bad only using 12 - 11oz cans. That would be just over 1 gallon of dip. I would say to get rid of the spray lines, and get nice even coverage for a coupe size vehicle you would be looking at 2 gallons of dip. Just a rough estimate.

dipyourcar.com is a good site for those who want to research this. Its where the pics come from I posted. He describes the process reasonably well in his videos. Since he seels the dip by the gallon pre-thinned to be sprayed he doesnt disclose the ratio. I went ahead and ordered from USplastics one gallon of mix and one gallon of thinner. I am going to do a 50/50 mix and see where that gets me. I did order the sprayer he recommends on his website, if memory serves its the Wagner double duty HPLV sprayer.

edit: Forgot to mention this. I called my Scion B customer and asked him if it was ok for me to take some pics of what I did on his car (emblems, race stripes, rims, and his rear window wiper) He is cool with it. I will be dropping by his work today and take some quick pictures with my iphone and post them here later today.

Wheels, emblems, grills, are easily done with cans. Unless you get a whole car order I would think you can steer clear of ordering whole gallons.

I have also seen a very large demand for this type of thing, recently I saw a BMW with the headlights done/wheels and even the exhaust, so is a new thing and is getting hotter by the month, many of the young kids are doing it now.

Looks like a good idea, I tried searching for it in Canada with no luck and when I contacted the guys at dipyourcar it will cost me around 90$ just to spay 4 wheels !!! I dont see how I can make money with that. Does anyone have any ideas where I can find it?

Myself and a friend Plasti dipped a set of wheels off of his 2005 F150 just yesterday. It is very easy to use, just be sure to mask off lug nuts and tires, etc. 2 cans covered 4 17" wheels and center caps.
