The new (to me) Montana

The Rainmaker
While I still haven't been able to get rid of the streaks, the rest of the van isn't coming along too badly.

White doesn't have the pop that a dark color has, but I didn't think the AIO/UPP turned out too bad.

Wait a second..... I thought you were like 19 years old. Who's that guy in the reflections? ;) j/k Looks good. White is a challenge, but it sure draws attention when it is shined up properly.

Charles looking good my man.....no luck with the streaks just yet?
Thanks.
Yeah all bad! I have tried so many chemicals I have lost track. The detail supply people didn't think a dye kit would do me any good since the plastic does have some type of coating on it. They didn't think the dye would penetrate that coating. I don't know, but whatever caused the streaks sure did.

19 is my age mentally. I'm not in my second childhood, I never grew out of my first.:)

It's looking good Charles.
White is a tough color to get to pop, but I'm sure that you will keep it looking great

:drool looks good, i love montana's.my wife says we don't need a van with no kids, but i envy you.

Sorry to hear about the streaking. I tried alot of things as well with no luck. The rest is great !! maybe a panel replacement is in need ..

You say that the plastic is coated and that's why it won't die....which I'm sure that you have figured out that its the coating that is stained....am I right?

If that is the case would stripping the coating off be something that you would want to do?.....I'm saying this because I was talking to a guy sometime back about painting my Jeeps plastic sides...He said that they strip the coating off so that they can shoot the primer and then the color.....You might check with a body shop on this one, it this is just a suggestion, I'm sue you know....You counf then condition the plastic yourself or better yet have it painted

Our kids are long gone.:)
My first mini-van, (Astro) was for busines use. We had no interest in one for personal use at that time. After having owned one since late 1987, I can't imagine not having ne aound. For our trips to the lake, it is great. Just open up the doors and stuff it full. I have hauled river rock, grass seed, pontoon boat seats, clothing for Goodwill, (Filled to the roof with only the front two buckets in place, recliner chairs. I think you get the idea. And it was all under roof and protected. Both Pontiacs drive like a car, the Astro van drove like a truck. Hey that's what it was and what I bought it for. It's my daily driver, but I still get to drive the GTP and the Corvette frequently.:)
They are unbelieveably handy.

You got it right on all counts. The cost is one thing that is topping me.

I think the panel replacement would be lots of money. I have had a guess, not an estimate, of $1500 for the panels. Add painting and installation and it's way more than I want to spend. I still hope to find what chemical stained the coating in streaks and see if I can stain it all to match.

You and I think alike find what stained it and then stain it to an even color...Have you tried a body shop to find out what they use to strip the plastic before they paint it? Might be a place to start

So far I have tried two body shops, two detail shops, a Pontiac dealer, a body shop supply store, and a detail supply store.
The one thing I can't get any of them to do is to forget about removing the straks, lets streak the original to match. Tomorrow I plan to visit with a quicky detail shop that uses a lot of spray glazes and dressings. They do all the details for a very large used car auction. Maybe some of the stuff they use will do the trick. They run two lanes about 300' long and it is a real production line operation. They probably do anywhere from 200 to 400 vehicles a week. Most of what they do is with chemicals so it sounds like the right kind of place to check.

Sounds like a place that would understand what it would take....keep us informed I'm interested in hearing what it is, or still help
