The $6,600 tune up

My first detail (paint seal) since I got back from vacation was this beautiful Lambo Roadster convertible.I did it on site at the dealer, one thing I noticed in the service area was this engine the mechanic was working on. I asked him where it was from and what he was doing to it. Turns out it is from a Ferarri and he was doing a 30,000 mile maintenence. Hmmm, I said so what does that cost? well, we bill at $185.00 an hour and it takes 36 hours for this car. Ferarri makes some of their models where you have to pull the engine to work on them. I guess I will scratch that car off my "want" list.

30k miles?!! Talk about a daily driver.





I guess when you have that much, it doesn't phase you as much.
 
I believe in order to work on a lot of the older Ferraris you have to pull the engine out and the pain is the engine has to come out from the bottom. Not fun.
 
wow, $185/hour.



here in SoCal, doctors get paid $60-$80/hour working for the big groups like Kaiser, etc.
 
Um....the mechanic isn't getting $185/hour, the dealer is. And I'm sure the "big group" is getting a lot more than the $60-80/hour the doc is getting.
 
Setec, he's a surgeon so I'm pretty sure he knows that already.;)



That "tune-up" price sure makes that an expensive car to get as a gift.:lol

I'm in the medical biz, so for me, it's how I compare things.

If you can afford the car, you can afford $185.00 hr billing rate. The numbers are correct

for a tune-up.

On an off topic question... What kind of surgeon are you? I'm going to be starting the long haul to Surgeon with a specialty in Nuerology next fall, worth it?

neurologic surgeons = neuro-surgeons = brain surgeons



neurologists = non-surgeon MDs that specialize in neurology.



I'm an ophthalmologist ( = eye surgeon) -- after the bachelors degree, then 4 years to earn the M.D. degree, then 1 year of a general medicine/general surgery internship, then 3 years of ophthalmology residency training, then 1 more year of an ophthalmology fellowship.



But, I can often make a blind man see.

:rules: ok -- this post is way off topic now, but I hope the others will forgive this! (and forgive the thread hi-jacking!) sorry.







and oh yeah, it's definitely worth it.



I seriously love performing eye surgery (even more than I enjoy cars and detailing). I'm very lucky because my passion is my profession.



If you're the type that likes working with your hands, likes working hard, likes helping others, likes mental challenges, and likes being meticulous, then surgery is for you. It also pays pretty damn well, but then again, it attracts the gold-diggers too (very prevalent here in L.A.)



It's definitely the long haul. If you want to do neuro-surgery, it will be 4 yrs for the Bachelors degree, 4 years for medical school, 1 year for internship, 5 more years of neurosurgery residency, and then 1-2 more years for a neurosurgery fellowship = 15-16 years of school/training after graduating high school.



I did 13 years -- I finished high school at 17, then after 13 years, at the age of 30 I 'set-up shop' in private practice -- I work 4 days a week, then 1 day a week I teach ophthalmology surgery to the resident doctors at UCLA by doing free charity cases.



And then I spend the weekends with my 21 year old girlfriend -- who's not a gold digger.
 
Yeah, I realize it's a long time of, but that too has been my dream job for awhile, not to mention my parents. The brain and nervous system have always impressed me and that drive makes me want to go through it. How does this sound for college:



I plan on going to Georgia Tech and going with a Major of Physics and a minor in Chemistery plus all of the classes I'll need to have a rainbow-esque finish on the MCATS. Transfer over to Emory for the Medical part, and they give you an intership there, or atleast that's what the dean told me. And the find a residency in the area... And on a sorta a personal note what do you make, and what would you think I'd make?

sounds like a good plan -- keep your nose in the books and put in the time and you'll do great.

it says that the average is $340,722 per year.
 
Wow, we went from detailing to surgery........If I keep detailing cars at my age I will need surgery soon on my back, maybe you guys can operate on me???? on second thought...................
 
Two comments to add . . .



1. My friend's dad until recently owned a Testarossa from the late 80's or early 90's. The engine needed to be dropped for maintenance.



2. I want to be ceiol. M3 convertible, 21 year old gf, loves his job. What else is there in life?
