Tell Me It Ain't So!

Went out the other day like normal and what do you think I noticed as I was looking over my recently bought new vehicle?
That's right.... a large chip in the paint, a deep one at that!
Here are some pic's:

Your guess is as good as mine on how it got there.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

Dispatch- Ifyou use the DrColorChips stuff, I strongly encourage you to *NOT* apply it as per their instructions (lots of product, wipe area with their solvent), but rather apply it carefully with a small artist's brush and only use the solvent to level it (try to not merely remove all the touchup paint). My efforts with their stuff worked out *MUCH* better that way and there was less chance of marring the paint too.

That chip is too large for Dr Colorchip. You will not be happy with the result. I would either use the Lanka method with touch up and clear or use touch up and clear with careful wet sanding. Either way the repair will not be perfect. You can also file an insurance claim and get the panel re sprayed at a body shop. That's the only way to get a perfect result.

On a side note I have found that WD40 works pretty well as a leveler with urethane touch up. Much cheaper than either Dr Colorchip or Lanka.

Yes, I am a believer. I love the Dr. It is not perfect, but it beats the dab on stuff from the dealer or one of those pens that blob. Try it.

I've used a *lot* of different touchup paints, and IMO the Dr Colorchip stuff is OK. Eh, maybe even a little better than OK in come colors, but it wouldn't be my choice for some area that's gonna get corrected from time to time.

I straddle the fence when it comes to recommending the stuff, I could go either way just as I do when choosing something to use on my own vehicles.

If I had a nasty chip in the hood of my car (hey, wait....I do on at least one vehicle!), I'd use conventional bc/cc touchup paint and level it the hard way if I couldn't stand the blob-effect.

That said, I used two bottles worth of Dr Colorchip on the white Crown Vic, and it turned out great, great enough that I believe it helped sell the car. I use it on the Tahoe's DIY (door seam) rust repair and it was perfect for that. But would I use it on the Audis? Nope, not in a million years.

Again, IME you simply *must* use it like a conventional touchup paint or the results will be unsatisfactory. Rubbing a large area with their solvent, even if you use a good MF (which will then be ruined) could easily mar the paint. IIRC they send you a cloth to use...something I wouldn't touch my paint with for any reason.
