Anyone has the right to put as many holes and pieces of metal in their body or face as they want but some act all surprised when people view them as less than a professional looking businessman. Don't take this as a personal insult(I'm not judging the type of person you are by the number of piercings you have ) but if someone views another person as a freak then they automatically make assumptions about them. That doesn't mean that those assumptions are true but if you want to be treated as a professional businessman then IMO you should look like a professional(within reason). Good business sense is not to offend potential customers.

+1

I have friends that think people who assume and judge people by their outside appearance (race, sex, religion, body modifications, etc.) are ignorant. IMHO, it is them (my friends) who are ignorant if they don't think the world is going to judge them by their outside appearance. We don't live in a perfect world so deal with it! If you want to look different from everyone, expect to be treated differently as you are not the norm. If we lived in a society where we all had body modifications, it would be the opposite.

Anyway, back on topic I don't have any issues with people who have tattoos and piercings. I do wonder if these people actually think long term though and wonder what they'll look like when they're older. It might look "cool" to them at the moment, but a 70 year old woman with a butterfly on her butt crack isn't going to look so hot.

This kinda reminds me of Ross Perot in the '92 election responding to the questions about imposing a dress code on EDS employees in the 60's and 70's, and didn't that make him intolerant, etc. His answer was that their competitor, IBM, had a dress code, and even if EDS was as good or better than IBM, the had to look the part or as a startup company they wouldn't be taken seriously.

I do find it kind of ironic that someone who details cars for a living, essentially catering to people who want to be judged on the appearance of their car, is complaining about being judged by his appearance.

Our momma's may have told us not to judge a book by its cover, but that doesn't mean that we don't. I fully support anyone's right to modify their body, as much as I support anyone's right not to. I guess another irony of this thread is that if True Detailer had said "I'm black and I do a great job of detailing, but a lot of times I don't get called back" most of us would have found that abhorrent but a lot of people here are saying he should expect to get that treatment because of "who he choses to be". I suppose it could be argued that people don't choose their race, but they choose to tattoo/pierce. I dunno.

Some people are just so ignorant they will never understand.

You know everyone in one way or another has modified themselves in their lifetime.

You do relize that something so simple as shaving or cutting your hair a certain way is modification. You have this image that you want and you do what it takes to have it. Thats modification. Just on the other side of the spectrum. My type of modification is on the other side of the spectrum. So before people judge me and say i don't fit their professional image they need to look at themselves.

This is not directed at anyone who posted in this thread.

That's not discrimination. If you choose to ink your body or stick a bolt through your nose, don't expect an employer to say he can't fire you because you'd be discriminated against. There are certain codes of conduct to follow. Can I wear flip flops, Speedo and a cut-off T-shirt to work? No, I'd be fired.

Firing or mistreating you based on your race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion or sexual orientation is discrimination.

Someone has every right to judge you based on your appearance that you altered yourself. I work in the medical field and the doctor who employs me said he would never hire anyone with a visible tattoo or a male with visible piercings. It does not convey the appearance or level of professionalism he wants in his office and around his patients.

I like tattoos. Been thinking on getting one on my calf. But I understand the possible repercussions professionally if I decide to go through with it. I wear chinos / slacks 52 weeks a year, so I'll be ok. My brother just got his whole right shoulder and arm down to his elbow inked up.

three tattoos, all of which cant be seen while my shirt is on.

If I could make two magically disappear...I would..just not into them anymore.

What bothers me, is the people who are bothered by piercings and tattood. I'm what most of you would probably consider heavily modified. I've got 1 1/4 inch stretched earlobes with 4 gauge upper earlobe piercings. A 2 gauge septum piercing and my tounge at a 2 gauge. And the jewlery is always in. I have 3 large tattoos also which are visible. This along with my facial hair(long goatee and big sideburns) seems to scare off alot of potential repeat customers. And it really bothers me. I mean come on, whats more imporntant. The quality of the detail or how someone looks. By no means do i look clean cut but i act very professional and my quality is always the same. Perfect. end rant.

I don't have a problem with this at all and have zero tattoos or piercings. I, personally, see past any visual differences and base my relationship on personality and, in this case, workmanship. Sad when others don't do the same. The new Amazing Race was on this past Sunday and one team were "Goth"; sure, very edgy in their style, fine with me, they performed awesome. Sad thing, a lot of people were labeling them as "freaks". No need, most of them got ultimately beat by them in the first leg.

Had both ears pierced through college, none now. Working up some designs for a 1/4-1/2 sleeve and something on my back and/or chest. All not visible when wearing a polo.
