Tar on chrome exhaust tips

Got a lot of tar on the exhaust tips. I have some Tarminator. Should I just spray the tips and leave it there to soak and then wash off? Don't want to wipe it and risk scratching the chrome.
 
Make sure the tips are completely cool then use 3M Tar and Adhesive Remover with #0000 steel wool. Finish up with a polish like Mothers Chrome.
 
Goo Gone works for me everytime and safe. ALso clay. Has happened to me and my customers all the time. spray some goo gone on it and wait a sec. and then rub. Always comes off for me.
 
A straight gasoline soaked rag wrapped around the tips and allowed to dwell will dissolve the tar better and the tar will wipe right off without any effort. As mentioned, tips must be cool. Polish and re-protect after cleaning.

Commerial tar removers are just dilute forms of a petro distillates. No special science or ingredients here. :cool:
 
Safest and effective way is with Mineral Spirits. ( Household oil based paint thinner $3 / gal and clear coat safe if used on paint.) ... Just soak the rag and wrap the tip .. let it set for a bit .. it won't gas off as fast as gas and will desolve the tar .. Then a gentle wipe and see how your doing .. if some left ,, do it again .. Tar usually has sand in it too .. Gas if used in a confined area may flash if the fumes reach an ignition source.



Tarminator if I remember right has Xylene in it.
 
I hope everyone is intelligent enough not to have an open gas container or soaked rags indoors. :rolleyes:

Paint thinner has a tendency to discolor chrome and breakdown the clearcoat if these tips are such. Be careful.



Dwell time for gasoline is less than 1 min.. Should be not problem with evaporation and has more lube capacity. Gasoline has been working for over a quarter century for me, long before the for profit speciality products were introduced.
 
This is not automotive paint thinner and is totally clear coat safe and *will not* break down clear coat .. its called Mineral Spirits. I used the term Household Paint thinner because a lot in the US have no idea what Mineral Spirits are.



I also specified Household which is a totally different animal than the automotive paint thinners which may have an impact on the clear coat.
 
My bad I intepreted your statement as paint thinner. Now at least the poster will be able to know the products and will not misunderstand your recommendation like it did. :o



The reason I recommended gasoline is because if you have a lawn or any gas powered tools, there is aways some around in the gardening shed. This gets the job done quickly, properly and readily available at no cost. :xyxthumbs
