Taking perfect pics

Hi everyone, I see a lot of threads with outstanding job on picture taking. I was wondering what is the tips and tricks for getting the perfect pic. I have a Canon 990DS 14.7 megapix and no tri-pod. I can't seem to get good before after pics. Do I need a tri-pod, sun behind or infront, halogens or day light, macro or regular, do I need to have a set distance??? Please help with any suggestions that you may have. Thanks
