Swril removal by hand using Meguiars products

With my old VW Jetta I didn't care about good shampoos, microfibers, wax, etc... now that I bought a BMW my approach will have to change. Unfurtunatelly I live in Mexico (I love my country, its just that I can't get all the nice products you mention!!) and the only good (??) brand I can get is Meguiars. I have a couple of questions:

- has anyone tried any of the swril removers offered by meguiars?

- can you recommend any of the products offered by this brand (ie. shampoos, wax, etc)

thanks!

Welcome to Autopia!

The only swirl-removing product from Meguiar's that I like to use (let alone by hand) is the #80 Speed Glaze. It's pretty effective and user-friendly. I also like the #16 paste wax and the #62 shampoo is good too.

Thanks for your fast response!

I'm new on this and I can't identify the products by the number, where can I get a cross reference to see the comercial name of the product?

I agree with Accumulator. #80 works great by hand. #83 DACP is the strongest swirl remover/polish I would recommend using by hand, at least from Meguiars line up.

:welcome ag.

I've found almost every Meguiar's product I've ever used to be excellent. I don't think you'll go wrong with any of them.

I've had good results with Meguiar's ScratchX. It's meant only for hand application.

Re: 80, 83, and Scratch X.

Which one is the least aggressive? The most aggressive? Are these products physically abrasive? Or are they just fillers? Please help.

ScratchX is less aggressive. #83 is the most aggressive. They are abrasive cleaners (cutting power) rather than fillers (swirl hiding.

Scottwax,

How to #83 by hand? Will it not haze? Tried it before but can't seem to break down the diminishing abrasivess... I guess it requires heat from the rotary to break down...??? After that I tried the 3M Scratch Remover and it seemed like performing #83 easily by hand when in comes to swirl removal.

From my experience with these products I would rank them 83,80, Scratch X. Some people think Scratch X is really aggressive and would put it ahead of 80 but I found Scratch X to be mild.

All three products are physically abrasive and also contain fillers.

Meguiar's #9, #80, #82 are abrasive polishes that can be used fairly effectively by hand. #83 is pretty tough to use by hand over an entire vehicle. It's not to bad if you use it on the worst areas, and then drop down to a less abraisve polish on the rest of the vehicle.

Most Meguiar's polishes contain a lot of oils that tend to fill.......... for a short while.

ScratchX is a product that is specifically formulated for hand use by amateurs.

ScratchX is pretty aggressive AT FIRST, but it isn't aggressive FOR VERY LONG. Because it's used by hand, the abrasives have to be soft and break down easily.

There's no getting around the fact that removing swirls by hand is going to be hard work. With ScratchX, the trick is application and reapplication of product, and reapplication again.

The Detailer Line would be the way to go. along with a few selected professional line products

I'll be testing the detailer line very shortly.

So scratch x is most affective by layering it? Just put a couple coats on and then apply the wax or w/e?

Youâ€â„¢re not really layering it (say like a wax), but since it is abrasive you do as many applications as needed to remove the defect youâ€â„¢re working on. Like Mosca said, it is designed for use by hand, so the abrasives break down fairly fast, thus the need for multiple applications depending on the severity of the defect.

Here is an article by Mike Phillips from Megâ€â„¢s on how to use ScratchX:

Think of ScratchX or any abrassive or chemical cleaner like you do a Kitchen cleanser. You aren't really applying it like a wax or sealant, you are using the abrassives in it to clean the paint and then you wipe it off. It is going to take some work by hand for it to be effective. You don't just wipe a kitchen cleanser on the counter when you are trying to remove a stain, you put some elbow grease behind it. If the stain doesn't come off the first time, you repeat the process. Same goes for a paint cleaner, just be careful with how much elbow grease you use, far better to do 10 applications with less pressure than 1 with too much pressure.

TOGWT, thanks for bring this to the attention of members and readers of this thread. :xyxthumbs

Can anyone tell me where Gold Class fits in this list? I also purchased a Meguiars "Show Car" kit which has 2 different plastic bottles of "polish" which I am assuming 1 is the same as #7? I guess I could surf on over to the Meguiars site but it might be of interest to other reviewers of this thread. ;)

Hi Hemi57, good to see another Melbournian on Autopia. Which suburb are you from? I'm in Camberwell.

As far as the Megs polishes, what are they called on the bottles? They could be from the consumer range which won't be on the above list. Same deal with Gold Class.

Hi there Alfisti.

East Malvern off Burke Road so we are almost neighbours eh?

I will check out the pack tonight and drop another reply with a little more detail. Cheers
