Super Glue Removal from Dash Plastic

Hey guys, so I'm an idiot and I got some super glue on some dash plastic. It is the hard plastic kind, not any kind of faux leather or vinal.



I read in the other threads I saw on here about using acetone to remove it, or find a debonding agent at a hobby or hardware shop. My main concern is that this may discolor the plastic...any ideas?

Something like this requires masking off the glue... and starting with some 'gentler' products' start with something like folex, let it sit for a bit. if it doesnt budge, then try goo gone, then try some tarminator, if thats a no go try the nail polish remover, if not it looks like you'll have to discolor it by trying a harsh cleaner like stoners xenit or other solevent adhesive removers. if this is the case only try it if your dash is black... then you can apply something like forever black or other trim dye colorings. but i've never done that so I have no idea how it will turn out.
 
Yeah, I was thinking that nailpolish remover would rip the color out...or cause a haze to develop. I do luck out that it is not really too visible of an area...and the dash area is black...
 
It is my understanding that super glue does not hold up very well when wet. I remember reading something about the medical solution for getting it in your eyes is to do nothing as the moisture in your eyes will slowly dissolve the glue. With that in mind, you might try keeping the area wet overnight with a gauze pad or cotton ball maybe held in place with plastic wrap and some tape.
 
Super glue in the eye bonds to the proteins within the eye and normally disolves within a few hours. Usually a warmed 3% sodium bicarbonate solution used to wash eyes repeatedly can assist in aiding more rapid removal of the adhesive...

However since the glue is bonded to plastic and not the proteins within the eye... :o



I have fixed outdoor lighting with super glue...it gets wet all the time and has remained strong; so I don't think the keeping it wet idea would work...however could be worth a shot.
 
Guys, there are cyanoacrylate removers. Acetone is one that comes to mind. There are also targeted products you'll find at the hobby shop (if you recall what that is). I would use extreme caution as they're likely to remove color with the hardened glue.
 
What would be my safest choice to start with? I have no experience in any of this stuff. I would like to stay away from discoloring the interior.





The glue used was a electrical form of super glue ment to be used on electronics... if that makes sense...
 
I have used debonder on a number of things with no ill effects, including vinyl decals, and screen printed foam. It did nothing to the underlying color.



This is, of course, absolutely no promise that it won't do something negative to your vinyl, but I'd get some and try it out on a non-visible area. It will probably be just fine. The best thing is, there is no question that this will work. Go anywhere you can buy R/C airplanes, and you can find the debonder.
 
Well, after closer look there is also wd-40 residue or so it seems. I do not know why this idiot thought to use wd-40.I have tried soap and water and vinyl clearner and they have done nothing for either.





I am not sure if the wd-40 hurt anything, It seems to always come back after it dries. I am not sure if it is discolored or not. Any ideas for wd-40?





edit - I got the glue out with some brake clearer, i tried it on another area first and all went well. I tried to get a picture of the wd-40 residue but I just cant get a good angle. I can only see it under my carport light in the dark. I cannot see it with any other sort of light directly on it or near it so I take it that it did not discolor the dash. I heard lighter fluid might work, would anyone reccommend this? Seems a little iffy at best.



Any help would be great, it sucks to have your first new car tarnished with little things like this.
