Supaguard and waxing/washing?

Hi all,

Now I know Supaguard isnt rated much in detailing circles and Im under no illusions that the three years of claimed protection is overly optimistic. However, I picked up my new car last weekend (new to me - three year old approved used car) and as part of the deal the car was treated with supaguard. It looks great, very shiny - better than I had expected and water is beading off the car nicely.

Im not crazy about detailing but I do like to look after my cars the best I can. I would say that I wash my car once a month on average and now that I have something nice Ill be giving it more thorough attention about once every six months. I understand more would be better but the realities of life mean time is always tight.

My first question relates to those bi-annual treatments. What would be best to use, something which wont scrub off the supaguard but would actually compliment or top it up? I was thinking some kind of wax might provide an additional layer of protection over the top? Would there be some benefit in me applying a treatment now while the car is relatively free of contaminants etc?

My second question is on the topic of monthly washes. Recently I have been using CarPlan Demon Snow Foam. I like the idea of snow foam and its kind of fun - but I dont think this is the best product out there. Have been looking at other brands like Pro-Kleen but dont really know whats good? Any suggestions? Im applying using a Karcher pressure washer and foam bottle. Is the snow foam thing just a fad and would I be better going back to a bucket and sponge? How about Traffic Film Remover - my gut feeling is that if it lifts grime and dirt the way its claimed that it would also strip off any wax or similar protective coating! I could be totally wrong about that.

Thanks for reading. I hope someone can provide some guidance on how to keep my car looking great without getting in to clay and spending half a day applying exotic ointments every couple of weeks.

Welcome to Autopia! The land of exotic ointments (I like that). I have never heard of that particular coating. The dealer should have given you a booklet detailing what voodoo you had to perform to maintain their coating system. Basically they up charge you for a "coating" hoping you will never make a claim against them and if you do they will claim you did not follow the directions to the letter. If you did happen to follow their directions they might reapply the coating wasting more of your valuable time. Also dont buy the fabric protectant package at the furniture store. The foam lance is great and not a passing fad, use it in conjunction with the 2 BM wash to keep the clear coat free of swirls. There are many good soaps on the market. Put soaps in the search and you will see everyones favorite, I like Ultima car wash. Also search car wash methods to see the great threads on the "correct" way to wash your car. Most of all welcome and enjoy your new car!

Welcome to the Forum -
Supaguard is apparently from the U.K. and if you google it, there are several blogs from users in the UK that talk about it..

One blog I read, a poster said he would wash the new BMW, make it ready, but the box of supaguard that cost them L25 in the boot, and charge the Client L299 for it.. He never actually applied it to the paintwork... How sad...

I have zero experience with this product..

Did the Dealership leave the box this product came in with instructions and possibly a "renewer" liquid or something to use on it every 6 months or so, etc., ?

This Renewal product, if they make it and you have it, would be the best thing to apply to the sealant, but you would have to wash the vehicle very well and see if you can clean the paint a bit deeper so that it would be more accepting of the renewal product, if you have that...

If you are just foaming your vehicle down and not scrubbing it with something after foaming, then it is not really getting as clean as it could...

Applying something to it bi-annually could help, but for sure, waxes, are only very short lived and would never make it that far in the first place..

Appreciate your wanting to keep the vehicle looking its best, but if you want to maintain it, it will eventually need more work than what you are proposing to do.. And this is ok too...

The only car wash soap I use on coated vehicles is Car Pro Reset, and it works really great at not removing Coatings, and cleans the paint really well...

Good Luck -
