sun roof in bad shape.

I couldn't find any threads with the problem.



I picked up a 2000 Toyota Celica on Saturday. One of the many things that needs to be addressed is the horrible condition of the sun roof. There are hard water spots and really bad turning/cracking of the tint.

What would you suggest to best remedy this?

Nothing to lose, soak it in vinegar and water for a half an hour and then "buff it'.

There are other systems that will do the job, but all you can hope for is to break doen the hard water deposits a bit and buff it like you would paint, if it is glass and not plastic.

I can't tell if the tint is on the outside? I've never seen that before. When you do the vinegar soak, lay some paper towels flat over the glass first. They'll soak up the vinegar and hold it against the surface. Distilled white vinegar is best. Good luck!
 
That sure looks like polycarbonate/lexan to me... and if it is, the best approach may well be to damp or wet sand it and either polish or apply a new UV coating.

That's what I was wondering. But I had never seen a poly sunroof before. Ick! Just asking for trouble!
 
Turns put it is plastic. Silly me. Only the 04-05 celicas had glass sunroofs. I'll wetsand and polish this one and then try and find a glass one to pop in there. Pics to follow.

Yeah, no kidding. The "transparent" targa tops on Corvettes have been made using Lexan for years and I've seen several that age and oxidize in a similar fashion. They're salvageable, but it's not easy work.
