Stubborn Dirt Marks on the Clearcoat?

I have a 2006 Red Pontiac Torrent. After washing it today for the first time in a couple months I had some really stubborn dirt to get off the tailgate.

When I looked closer there were a few little dirt specs that were hard to get off.

After I thought I got them off I noticed in a few spots where they were it looks like somehow the clearcoat got etched from the dirt spot being there too long, or at least that is my assumption. They are now little white dot marks.

I tried a liquid wax on the area. They seemed to disappear but then when the area dried they reappeared.

Sorry no pictures, but has anyone seen this type of thing before?

The only thing I have seen like this before was my previous car with rail dust spots but they didn't leave any visible marks or etching in the clearcoat afterwards?

Would a wax or polish be my best bet to try and get rid of these or hide them?

I tried some polish and they still are there. So I am not sure what could have caused these and why they won't go away.

To be clearer I wash it by going to the car wash in my city at least once every couple weeks. I haven't hand washed in for a couple months.

jhorton- It's quite possible that the contamination caused actual damage from having sat on the paint for so long. I'd try a paint cleaner, and if that doesn't work a polish, and if that doesn't work a compound.
