Strep Throat Bites!

LastDetail

Whose yer DADDY!??!?!?!?!
Hey everyone, it is official I have contracted Strep Throat.
Let me tell you this disease friggin sucks! It came on strong out of nowhere on july 5(at least it didn't ruin the celebrations for the 4th) and just kept coming. I wasn't able to eat until today. I lost 12 friggin pounds in 4 days, (atkins eat your heart out) and I only ate today if you count soup as food. I havent had a cup of coffee or a ciggarette since the 4th this disease just takes it all out of you.
BUT there is a plus side, someone finally nagged me into going to see the doctor, I am not a big fan of going to the doctor. Anyway I got TWO shots, (I hate shots), of some antibiotic and started feeling better almost immediately. It was like magic! Anyway I am on the recovery, watching every DVD I own (I forgot how much daytime tv SUCKS) Won't be able to detail for at least another week.

An interesting post script for this one. I thought it was strange that neither of my dogs would come anywhere near me when I was really sick, normally they are whores for attention. I commented about this to the doctor and she said that animals can actually smell the sickness in us, often before we even know we are sick, this is why you don't see a lot of dogs with a cold or the flu. Interesting huh?

why was my post deleted?

i just asked if the smoking could have induced u getting sick quicker?
my stepmom smokes and when she gets a regular cold she automatically starts getting throat pains. before she even reaches a temperaure worth diagnosing it a cold.

incase u didnt read, i hope u well. i know what it feels like to be soo sick u can't eat.

feel better

aaa yes strep throat. I always didnt mind strep throat but when i get it , its very mild. I can eat but it will just hurt a little bit. after drinking some liquids im good as new. The reason I like it is becuase the doctor says you cant go out for 2 days and that usually means missing school. So i can do whatever I want around the house haha. I know yours is much more severe. Im pretty imune to things. Hope you are back to normal in no time!!

Smoking usually just makes lung stuff go a little bit crazier, I don't know about throat. like a common cold could become bronchitis or something like that. I have no idea I just know I got really sick REALLY fast, I didn't even get a chance to smoke between feeling good and feeling dead.

I don't know how your post got deleted but I didn't do it.

Wow, I thought I was the only one. I got strep yesterday! I haven't been to the doc but I know it well. I've had strep over 10 times now! It's always fairly mild and I don't even bother getting antibiotics, but missing work and having it hurt to eat really sucks. I'm on day two of my no work (my job entails talking ALL day. No way with strip. It hurts to swalow say nothing about talk.) and I'm all out of DVDs. If I don't go in tomorrow, I'll have to go to fam video or blockbuster or something! Get well soon friend. I'll be praying for ya!

Right back atcha

Don't know how kindly you'll take to this advice but it has always worked for me. Well since I've been of age anyways. Better than atibiotics. Shoot some valdka every few hrs. Kill EVERYTHING in your throught. It's helped me. Yes it hurts.... like mad.... a lot... i mean tons.... trust me it huts ok.... but it helps recovery. The buzz cutts the over all pain too. Lemmy know if you try it. I started this afternoon!

DOH! I used to get Strep so bad I couldnt even talk and every time I swallowed I wanted to rip my head off! You probably got a shot of Penecillin. It literally does start to work in an hour or so. You should be feeling really good in a day or two.

Although a shot of vodka may get the buzz going, it will slow down the effectiveness of antibiotics. Your liver will be breaking down the alcohol and making your body work harder to fight off the infection. If you want to recover faster, avoid alcohol. Then , once you're back on your feet 100%, get pissy drunk and say :doubleduc you Strep Throat!

Mike

I'm sorry to hear that you are sick and hope that you get well soon so you can enjoy detailing again.

Good Point. I don't take antiboitics for it so that's not an issue for me. The point isn't so much the buzz tho. It's the alchoal killing the bacteria in your throat! I feel a lot better today after about 10 shots last night.... over the course of several hours of course.

Strep throat is a fairly common infection. The severity of it partially depends on the type of Strep involved. There are a number of species of Strep. The safest and most effective way to treat it is with proper antibiotics. You must take all of the prescription. Taking antibiotics only till you feel better allows some of the little buggers to survive and ultimately adapt to them and therefore increase the likelyhood of developing resistance. It is the bacteria that become resistant to antibiotics.....not people. I would not recommend alcohol to treat Strep. It may kill some of the bacteria but it also kills the tissue cells that it comes in contact with.....that why it hurts so much. Improperly or untreated Strep throat can lead to severe epiglottitis and systemic infection that can also attack the valves of the heart, the mitral valve in particular. It is a fairly common source of subacute bacterial endocarditis. The infected valve must be replaced surgically. The epiglottis is a flap-like structure of tissue that covers the airway when we swallow so that things go to the stomach and not the lungs. Severe infection of this can occlude the airway altogether and instead of a bad sore throat you can wake up suddenly not be able to breathe. People die of this because the airway has to be reestablished often with an emergent tracheostomy/crycothyrotomy, the airway will be too swollen to pass a standard endotracheal tube. Jim Henson ( of Muppet fame) died of something like this. It is simply not the end of the world to go to the doctor. A quick throat swab and office test detects strep. While a shot of any antibiotic is not fun, it is certainly survivable. Recurrent strep throat often indicates that there is a permanent nidus of infection, most likely residing in the tonsils, if you still have them. Getting rid of the tonsils is a often recommended treatment for recurrent strep. It is a day surgery procedure and, while it is the pits to recover from, it is quite survivable as well. I'm am often surprised by the lacksidasical attitude toward health issues. It is simply a matter of doing and/or maintaining the proper detailing of your body instead of your car. You can ultimately replace your car, but you cannot replace your body. If you want to live, you got to have one, period. Apply the same degree of concern and attention to detail to your health that you do a car's finish and you will come out much better for it.

Yup. What Mtwedt said. I wasn't going to get into that much, but well put! I don't have my tonsils or adenoids anymore. The doc said my adenoids broke open when he took them out and it looked like half melted velveta cheese because they were so infected. Anyone up for nachos!? :hungry lol. I don't think I've had strep since, and it's been about 10 years.

very interesting info. To be honest I've been to the doc everyother time and he's never made a big deal of it. Last time i went he said it wasn't severe and I should recover in a few days and didn't give my anything for it. *shrug* It sounds like you really know what your talking about. If it persists or comes back again in the future I'll be sure to see the doc. As far as the aclohol hurtting so much, I'm quite sure it would be because the area is inflamed. Valka hurts going down sick or healty. I bet it only hurts more because the tissue is senstive due to the infection. I know completely what you mean about the health issue as well. I take it very seriously. I eat right and work out a few times a week. I don't smoke or drink to excess. I kind of got shafted by my employer and am stuck for a year w/o health ins. I'm not rich and unless it's really important I can't afford to go to the doc. Just to get a culture is going to be at leas a hundred bucks! Especialy with missing work it's hard to cough up the cash. If it's not all better by Monday I will be going to the doc. Thanks for the concern.

Are you actually a doctor? That was very impressive. I got the shots, one in each butt-cheek and you know I was so out of it with the fever at that time I barely felt the injections. The doctor put me on cefuroxime axetil for the next 7 days and I am already feeling better. I can finally eat again, and I ate so much food. God I feel better. Anyway thanks guys for the support, hope you are feeling better to Koop.

Last Detail: No...I'm not a doctor....I'm a critical care nurse with a practice in Cardiac Surgery for the past 25 years. I've had patients for valve replacement secondary to strep infections. I try to pitch in with accurate info when health topics arise on this site as a matter of professional committment and patient advocacy. I'm not an experienced detailer of cars by any means, I only got into it this past year, but I'm a very experienced "detailer of patients", if you will. It seems only a fair return for all the wonderful information, techniques and skills that I have had access to as a member of DC. I am always happy to answer any questions that I can or suggest resources where answers can be found. The health care system is an intimidating maze of professions and therapies that can scare, frustrate and confuse patients and families who may already be under a great deal of stress. One of Nursing's key roles is to advocate for the patient/families as they go through this system.

For the member who had concerns about costs and not having insurance ( I imagine that this is a big problem for all self-employed folks) there may be cost adjusted resources in your local community health system. If you live near a medical school, there are usually outpatient clinics available at reduced cost. The same with dental schools. You can get some rather nasty systemic infections from not taking care of your teeth. If you have some financial resources for health care, you can check out Kaiser Permenente if that system is nearby. They focus on health maintenance and not just payouts for major hospitalizations. I'm not a member of Kaiser, but they do admit their patients to my hospital and we do all of their open heart surgery. I'm generally impressed with their thoroughness. I wonder if there could be any bargaining power via detailing professional associations that could offer a group type rate plan. I get various offers for group stuff as a nurse..from bank loans to malpractice insurance to cell phone plans.

Well I took your advice and went to urgent care today. Culture came back negative so I guess it wasn't even strep after all. I though I had it pegged after having it so many times. Bad news is I also found out my sister has mono today! I sure hope this isn't mono. (don't even think about suggesting I kissed my sister) The doc said it's probably just a virus, but it honestly seem pretty odd to me for a virus. Just a very sore thoat. No fever, and really no other symptoms at all until last night when I started coughing. Throat feels a lot better, but coughing sucks.

Well, it's nice to know you don't have Strep. Mono is spread by the oropharyngeal route, so possibly drinking out of something that the infected person has just drunk out of as well could spread it. A person can be a carrier for 10-50 days after recovery from mono. Mono is actually Ebstein-Barr virus or EBV and is diagnosed with a blood test showing the typical changes in the white blood cell types (increased monocytes and atypical forms) It produces fever of 101-103, sore throat, headache, malaise and characteristic swelling of the lymph nodes, especially in the neck. Antibiotics to do not treat this or any virus. I think your doctor is telling you that you have a viral upper respiratory infection and these are treated by symptom and time. Get a cough suppressant from the drug store and keep checking for a fever.....drink lots of fluids and get plenty of rest. If the cough is not better in a week or you get other symptoms...fever or coughing up something other thatn clear or white secretions...go back. You have my sympathy...this kind of stuff just gets in the way of everything you want to do.
