Streak-free interior glass?

Are we talking about the inside of a windshield?

I use a MF soaked in hot water, squeezed out til damp. Wipe down the inside, then follow up with a terry cloth and Stoner's IG. I avoid using a dry MF on inside glass because it tends to leave very small lint particles.

But you don't get lint with the terry cloth?

Here is what Sprayway's popular glass cleaner contains.

Chemical: ETHYLENE GLYCOL MONOBUTYL ETHER

CAS Number: 111-76-2

Glycol ethers are general solvents. Some are used for cleaners and degreasers.

Chemical: ETHYL ALCOHOL

CAS Number: 64-17-5

Ethyl Alcohol is also called grain alcohol. Ethanol mixed with water or other solvents can be used as a solvent.

Chemical: METHYL ALCOHOL

CAS Number: 67-56-1

It is also known as methanol. In glass cleaners it is a solvent.

Chemical: DEIONIZED WATER

CAS Number: 7732-18-5

This is pretty self-explanatory.

Chemical: LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS

CAS Number: 68476-85-7

It is commonly known as LPG or natural gas. Under pressure, it can be used as a propellant.

At $4 or $5 dollars per 19 oz. can of this cleaner, the simple alcohol / water mix could really save some money, and should produce results as good or better than any of the specialty glass cleaners that I have used.

One thing I have learned is that you should use the least amount neccessary of whatever cleaner you choose in order to produce a streak-free shine. Many streaks come from using too much product, some of which evaporates before being fully removed, leaving surfactants on the glass.

I've never had an issue with a high quality MF and DissapearingWindows which is a foaming type product. If your getting a lot of streaking it's probably the film buildup and not the product your using, so you need something to cut the buildup that doesn't streak. For real bad windows I use buffered hydrocloric acid which also doesn't streak very much and will get all the buildup off. It's safe to use for your hands but you should wear eye protection. Everything I said mostly applies to the windshield above all other interior glass, if your having issues with all the interior stuff you might need to find a different MF. I get away with using MF and water on most of the windows, front and back excluded. I have been using Viking MF for windows for the record.

This is the acid product and they also have a whale of a degreaser.

MSDS on the ingrediants:

SECTION 2 -HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS

Hydrochloric Acid: CAS #7647-01-0 Wt%=3.25

Sulfamic Acid: CAS #5329-14-6 Wt%=4.9

Oxalic acid: CAS #144-62-1 Wt%=2.5

Window film doesn't stand a chance against this stuff, but I only use it if there has been a long problem of streaking that my foam can't get.

I would be very careful with that acid cleaner. From the link provided it seems like overkill for interior automotive glass, but YMMV. The MSDS info for the product (Showers-n-Stuff) says,
Skin and Eyes: Liquid and vapor can cause severe irritation of the skin. Liquid or vapor can cause severe eye irritation and burns.
That does not sound like it is safe for your hands. :nervous2:

I think I am going to stick to alcohol and water...but if I ever need a heavy-duty shower cleaner, now I know where to turn. :up

Wheel acid has caused deaths as it seeps into the skin. If you had a special camera, i think infrared, your could photograph your bare hand as you drip hydroflouric acid on it and the liquid will stop at your hands surface but you'll see the vapors of the acid pass through your hand :nono

I still say the best glass cleaner is water with a touch of soap. No solvents, ammonia or other chemicals. Streak free everytime, including tobacco.

Autoglym's Glass Polish is great for interior or exterior glass. It is a solvent based polish unlike liquid spray cleaners and it really cuts the vinyl haze build-up. I apply a few dabs on a paper towel and spread it across the windshield. It dries almost instantly and buffs off with a clean mf to the clearest streak-free windows I have ever seen.

Another vote for the Autoglym. :brit

Best detailing product, of any kind, I've ever used.

Somebody hit it on the head when they said no glass cleaner will get every type of film off glass. Have you ever noticed that when switching to a "new" cleaner, that your windows look better than ever? I'd be willing to bet it's because the new cleaner is removing any film left by the "old" cleaner.

I've had good luck wiping extrememly dirty windows with a damp (just water) cloth then following with a microfiber lightly misted with Megs NXT glass cleaner and finally flipping the MF to the dry side and giving the glass a light buff.

The "trick" is to use the NXT cleaner lightly a little goes a long way and you get better results misting the cleaner on the towel, NOT the glass...even in direct sunlight.

I agree that the NXT glass cleaner is probably the best glass cleaner on the market, too bad you can't get it in bulk.

I use showers and stuff all the time with gloves and have no ill effects. I have used it w/o gloves and it makes your hands look like you were in a hot tub for a hour. Anyhow, some window film cannot be removed w/o heavy duty products and I stand by that. I only use it when all else fails, but in the bathroom this stuff rocks too.

After reading the MSDS for this product I'll pass thank you.

I've not found any dirt or grime on my glass that required a hazardous product to remove.

This seems to be very close to the same cleaner only in a concentrate. Mix 1:11 with distilled water. $12.63/gallon at Amazon. I gallon of concentrate makes 12 gallons of cleaner. I've used it and it is very good IMO. At just about a buck a gallon it is hard to find a better value.

If you need an acidic cleaner (and sometimes you do) use distilled vinegar. Its slower than the more aggressive acid cleaners but is non-toxic and does a good job. Finish off with your favourite window cleaner.

Burlyq, skin absorbs more than you imagine. Please be careful what you use without gloves. For example, washing skin/hair with a lauryl/laureth sulphate shampoo (nearly all shampoos, hand washes and toothpastes have it) causes the skin to absorb it into your body where it accumulates in your heart, liver, brain, and lungs. It takes seven days from cessation of usage for the body to expel it. Its a nerve and tissue toxin. When my wife stopped using a sulphate based shampoo (sources something different from a local health shop) she reduced shedding of her long her by 80% within a week.

Just two sources (Google for more):

http://www.health-report.co.uk/sodium_lauryl_sulphate.html

http://www.make-up-cosmetics.com/make-up/toxic-chemicals-cosmetic-products.html

We no longer use any sulphate (SLS) based detergent product on our bodies.

Never underestimate what is claimed to be 'safe' for your skin. Minor irritation could mean major tissue absorbtion.

Please don't take this as a criticism...just watching out for you...and anyone who'll listen. :)

I have tried the windex .. then the Stoners etc and a bunch of other things and by accident I found my method.

I have a small dog that looks out the rear door windows and occassionally gets nose marks on them. Out of habit when drying the car I wipe the 2 windows down with my MF .. I noticed after a while these windows were extreemly clean all the time ..

Realized it was the MF doing it ..

My method for streak free windows ( even in full sun ) is.

1) I use a clean wetted Meguiars towel using distilled water.

2) Wipe the glass down with the wet towel.

3) Immediatly dry the glass with a 16 x 24 Blue WW towel I got from Pak Shak

No sprays or chemicals needed . I have 2 sets of these towels and at the end of each detail they are washed with my other MF towels. I have a covered pail of distilled water and I just dip the Megs towel in it then wring it out into the pail.

So far ive found Sprayaway glass cleaner to be the best for me. Its in a blue and white aerosol can. It can be found in Home Depot or Menards or places like that. It was the first glass cleaner put in aerosol cans in the 1940s. It is still being made so somebody else must like it.
