strange stains on silver metallic toyotas

Hi all

Explanation first.

I am not a pro, rather detailing enthusiast, so maybe my question has very simple answer, but I do not know it therefore I ask.

A friend of mine has silver metallic toyota, and there are stains or spots appearing on the paint, these are hazy areas, sometimes a hand of a child leaves that mark, and the stains seem embedded in the paintwork. washing and waxing does not help. similar stains also appear on my other friend toyota with the same paint.

Have you ever encountered such problem??

What is the solution??

Claying?, Polishing?

What measures to take to get rid of this problem once and for all.

Any input much appreciated.

Cheers

IDK whats causing them but if its on the surface of the clear. I would Wash, Clay Bar, Polish, Seal, Wax...

Maybe putting a good sealant and a good wax over it might protect it better from doing that?

Just my input I am also an ethusiast so wait for a professional to chime in.

when i first clicked on this thread i thought i knew what u were talking about but i was thinking of something like acid rain drops on silver and white. ive had 2 single stage toyota trucks that were stained to the core. i understand hazy areas...but the hand print threw me off. lol maybe the car had really bad fallout and a bodyshop soaked it in oxalic acid and messed up the clear coat?

anyway post pics plz. and also maybe year and make of those toyotas?

If it's really a stain, then it can be easily removed by using appropriate products.

Try some full-strength All-Purpose-Cleaner, and then clay the surface.

If this does not help, you could be looking at a paint defect that's commonly noticeable in light to medium colours (especially on silver) - MOTTLING aka CLOUDING aka PIGMENTATION.

The clue is, this also appears on your friend's Toyota with the same colour.

How can the same kinda "unusual stains" happen on 2 different cars?

It's kinda like dark specks or dark patches on certain areas of the car. Very faint.

Most noticeable indoors or under artificial lighting. Not noticeable under bright sunlight.

It can manifest on factory paint or aftermarket paint or any cheapskate touch-up re-spray jobs.

My shop does lots of new Suzukis from the dealership, and on certain colours (grey and silver), mottling is a common problem that cannot be solved, as it is caused by the uneven distribution/orientation of the metallic flakes within the paint layers.

Thanks for input, I will post pictures when I get hold of my friend, on vacation now, it is not Pigmentation for sure, cause the stains are MOST visible in direct sunlight, like white smears embedded in the topcoat (clearcoat) I tried washing and waxing, I did not try claying yet. My hypothesis is that these are the result of direct sunlight and skin contact (oily skin) the sun can be harsh here in Ireland in this rare moments when appears. Or bad badge of coat (but I doubt it) Or influence of elements. These are light, milky looking smudges, sometimes an imprint of baby's hand, that is the best I can explain. I could see it on two toyotas. One Avensis 98 and one corolla 97, same paint. It might also be negligence to take proper care for the car cause local idea of the car wash is to put it out of garage when it rains.

Thanks again for all the posts, will put pics when my friend comes back from hols.

cheers

polish it out, it should take it off, if not, then surgery is required, 3000 sand paper. BUT! if you dont know how to do it right, research more, be careful.

I recently encountered exactly what you are talking about on a red Chrysler sebring. What it looks like is if you were to leave some type of residue on the paint(oily skin or maybe a hand lotion is what im thinking) and let it sit in the sun for a few hours. I found it in all the areas commonly touched like all over the doors and the edge of the trunk.

Washing and claying had no effect on it so the customer agreed to add a single step polish (optimum polish via pc on lc white) to the job which took care of it.
