Still confused on what will strip old wax before I detail??

Friday I have to detail a car and I am out of Griot's Paint Prep an forgot to order more with my last order. I hear a million different ways to take the old wax off. I hear blue dawn, prepsol, alcohol, mineral spirits and so on. What would be the best and safest way?

Dawn wash will do the trick. Be sure to use enough soap to be able to cut the wax. Also using clay will help remove the wax.:xyxthumbs

If you're using any kind of abrasive polish during the detail (even a mild SMR), that will strip the wax for you, no de-waxing step necessary . . .

If you do a bit of searching (and patient reading) you'll find Dawn washing is a bit over-rated and won't remove some waxes. Besides any kind of polish, any pre-cleaner product will work too.

Yeah, I heard dawn was not as great as everyone thinks. I guess if i go a coat of griot's #3 and a coat of p21s lotion i will be all set then.

I don't know Griot's #3 is, but if it has abrasives, then it will remove everything down to paint. If you are stuck in the future, go out and get some Mother's pre-wax cleaner. Stuff works great, gets the paint squeeky clean, and doesn't aid any oils or silicones. That is, if the car does not need to be polished.

i agree with Dawn not removing all the wax, which is why whenever i dawn, i clay, and soon will apply SEC(waiting to buy it) before topping with S100 paste, this will remove old wax for sure imho

For some reason after i wash if i want to remove wax i'll spray the car down with a 64:1 of APC+, even if im going to use any kind of abrasives. Maybe im just insane... im not thoroughly convinced it does remove the wax. ( I think im looking to just spend more time with my car)

from what i understand, the overuse of dawn can lead to drying out of exterior trim/plastics.. i'd only recommend dawn as a last resort for stripping wax. in the meantime, you can always pick up Meguiar's Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner at your local autozone.
