Stepping it up a notch

I've been slowly stepping up from cleaning to detailing. I'm glad to find this site. A lot of great info and great people. Now it's time to step it up. I've got my PC and I'm ready to try and do it right. I've seen all the great advice and results from that advice. I'm looking forward to achieving just a 1/10th of those results. I'm sure I'll be able to achieve a little better each time. Thanks for all the information everybody provides here. I look forward to being able to give back a little myself. I'm going to do my first full exterior detail tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Welcome to DC! Looking forward to reading about the results of your detail. What kind of car are you detailing?

I'm detailing my civic. The finish is kind of dull. Reflections are rough looking, I guess that would be either marring or orange peel (still trying to learn exactly what is meant when people talk about this). I'll find out soon enough. I'm looking to get a deep, wet finish with a closer to mirror like reflection. There's plenty of other stuff to take care of with the car, but I just want to learn how to use my PC for tomorrow. I've got plenty of small touchup spots to work out too. Still working out the bugs on my technique there. It's hard to match an old, probably faded red. Maybe I'm just being a little picky. Although, that's why I'm doing all this. If it works out alright, I will post pics. Or if it doesn't, I'll probably post pics and ask some questions with it. I've got the poorboy's line ready to go for this.

Ah - a red car! You'll have fun with that one. I'll bet you'll like what you see as you get into it. Red really shows off with a good polishing.

Marring is like small scratches. It can make your reflections look dull - like looking in a dirty mirror.

Orange Peel is more like little waves in the paint, a texture almost like an orange peel - hence the name. It may not affect reflections that much or it could make your reflections look like reflections in rippled water. Well that's a bit extreme but the best analogy I can think of at the moment.

Your paint could have both but I'd bet on marring and oxidation at the moment. Once you clear that up, then it will be obvious if you have orange peel or not.

I don't know that's too big an exaggeration....did you see joyride's (I think)post with that Hyuandai? WOW! That's some orange peel!

Yeah, I read that post earlier. That was a great example for me. That's why I mentioned that it could be orange peel with my car. I'll find out soon enough. I did see another post too with a couple of pictures showing the difference between spiderwebbing/marring and swirl marks. Those have definitely been very helpful. Things like that are very hard to describe accurately with words.

I am with Noracrv. Have you gotten any pictures yet?

Am I sounding a little impatient? Why it is five o'clock in the morning...the day is almost gone.

Look forward to your pictures!!!
