Steel Wool turned my rims yellow

I used steel wool and and 1Z chrome polish on my chrome rims. I had some rust looking spots on the rims. A few had suggested this would be a good combo for getting tough spots off chrome. I only this on one section of my rims but it turned it almost yellow. It doesn't really look shiny any more there is more of a yellowish tint to it. What happened? It didn't get rid of the spots either. What can I do to get rid of this yellowish tint.

pics please

worst case.....you scrubbed the chrome off and the yellow is the nickel under it

what is this thread #20 on there rims?

Is there anything you can do if it is the nickel? I didn't scrub for very long and like I mentioned it didn't get rid of the spots.

You must have used some heavy steel wool for a long time to remove the chrome? I guess you kept scrubbing as long as the spot were still there right? If so, there's no hope.

Yellow is probably rust. Maybe from steel beneath and maybe from the wool. I'd try once more with the chrome polish and a rag. If that doesn't take off the yellow, I'd start looking for refinishing or getting new wheels.

Are you sure the wheels are chrome, and not polished and cleared? It sort of sounds like you ruined the clearcoat on a wheel. Your extreme close-up picture in that one thread looks to me like clear also, since it was all scratched. Chrome is extremely hard, and so it's pretty tough to get scratches in it like that.

I get spots like that on my bare aluminum wheels. Are you sure these are chrome? If I let them get bad enough I have to use 2000 grit sandpaper to get the sh** off and then polish with a polishing wheel on my rotary. Post some pictures on the Caswell forum. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

I'm fairly sure these are chrome rims. By the way I used 0000 steel wool with 1z chrome polish and I only polished for about 30 seconds.
