Steam cleaner for underbody?

I like to keep my wheelwells and underbody as clean as possible. I try not to drive in the rain whenever possible and avoid running over any water or puddles in the road. Every now and then I remove all four wheels and clean the backsides of those. With the wheels off of the car I crawl underneath and use APC, such as simple green and a bucket with dishwashing detergent and water and a small towel to scrub all reachable areas. I will then go over the entire underbody and wheelwells with a pressure washer.

I would like to purchase a steam cleaner specifically for this purpose. Can anybody provide some recommendations? Thanks.

I got one of THESE and I like it a lot. I dunno about the areas in question though, I still end up doing alot with just APC/brushes/etc.

The pressure washer is good for really *nasty* jobs, and the steamer seems best for the sort of dirt that'll emulsify with heat. Most of the stuff under my vehicles (and in their wheelwells) just washes out with less aggressive methods.

I'll use the more aggressive approaches on used cars when I first get them, but from then on all I need to do is wash rather gently. Best things I've found for this are my small BHBs- they clean well (you can trim the bristles shorter to make them more aggressive) and even the *nastiest* stuff washes out of them every time with just a little APC.

i'm also considering a steam cleaner ... are there any threads with guidelines on proper use ... i'd be a bit concerned myself about getting to close to some materials and possibly damaging them

There're a few threads out there, but I don't have any links handy. Try to find the one that Anthony started, IIRC that had some good tips.

Generally, a little common sense goes a long way. I wear rubber gloves to protect my hands and other than that I just keep in mind that I'm spraying very hot water under considerable pressure- there are some things that you just don't want hot water on (e.g., plastics can melt, some things are water soluble, the pressure can blow certain things apart).
