Static-Cling Paint Protection Film

I'm not getting anywhere with the SEARCH function (and the puppy's driving me nuts...). So can anybody recommend a source for static-cling paint protection film? I had an old link but it's no longer working...

Setec- It was in an old PM from (the MIA) Bill D. The link was: http://www.madirect.com

He got some door-handle pieces for a C4 'vette and cut them to size, but I need something better than that anyhow.

This is primarily for the next dog-vehicle I get (off to see a candidate on Friday), can't use them on the Audis due to the repaints :(

Audicoupej- Thanks, that might work if I don't find made-to-fix ones. Something would be better than nothing as long as it stays put and doesn't move around (to mar stuff when the vehicle's dirty).

I have access to Llumar film, a plotter, and a huge computer database of patterns--I could certainly cut you something if need be. The installation can be trick depending upon application, but nothing you couldn't pick up for small pieces....

I don't want to get *too* ahead of myself here, don't even know if I'm gonna buy the new dog-hauler yet. But something to fit behind door/hatch handles would be nice insurance for that application, especially in the winter when the vehicles are filthy and I'm wearing heavy gloves. Wasn't a problem on the Blazer, what with its black plastic handles and surrounds.

Red98gt- Thanks, I'd seen the Cleartastic, but not cut to the right application. Is the InvisiGard static-cling or adhesive-mounted?

ebpcivicsi- Should've thought of you :D Same question: is the Llumar static-cling? If I ever wanted a more permanent-mount I could have Accumulatorette take it to TN some time and have you do it. Heh heh, might save myself some work and have you throw a complete detail on it too ;) Sure wish I had a pro of your caliber around these parts!

The Llumar is pressure sensitive adhesive, not static cling. The install would entail wetting the area with soapy water, placing the film in the door cup, then squeegeeing (is that a a word? :D ) out the excess water. On parts this small I typically just use alcohol for a quick tack. You could easily install it yourself. If you do get it just let me know and I could cut the pieces from scrap material(I could cut a few extras just in case the learning curve gets in the way ;) ). I would need the year so that I could find a donor vehicle to make the patterns(shouldn't be a problem with all of the traffic around here).

Is the InvisiGard static-cling or adhesive-mounted? Looks like it's adhesive based. I looked at the installation instructions on the web site...

Are you going to use this in lieu of a clear bra or are you just going to use it as a method of protection on road trips or something?

Protection against marring, specifically behind door/hatch handles and where the dogs' nails might hit paint on the rear step-bumper (despite my keeing them trimmed nice and short). I'm not a clear bra sort of guy; I live with stonechips, which for some reason don't bother me.

ebpcivicsi- Thanks for elaborating. If I decide to go with that, I really do think I'd have my wife take it on one of her family visits and have you do it.

In all honesty, I'll probably have my hands full just getting it ready for Ohio use (undercoating, etc.) and detailed, so I don't see myself trying to DIY it. Things are very different around here with the new canine additions to the family, and finding time to go out to the shop and detail is proving difficult. But hey, you never know...

We'll see if I buy it this weekend and if so, what I end up doing. The vehicle in question is a '04 GMC Yukon XL, down in Charlotte NC.

I gotta rethink my tendency to keep the drivers so nice...the huge thing could drive me nuts even if I *did* find the time and I gotta put in the time training the dogs.

But some quick on/off protection could be great if I can find it.

A great place to check is XPEL.com. Im a 3m certified installer and you need to reasearch before you buy.Llumar is good, 3m is good, we haven't seen any other products which are (imho) worth the time or hassle. You very much get what you pay for with PPF. Also poor quality film can be a costly false sense of security and may even damage your finish.

FitSport- I dunno...I'm hesitant to try outside-the-box applications  It certainly *appears* to be a good idea though, so props for suggesting it.

Having taken delivery of the Yukon and considered the whole thing, it looks like I'll be going with an adhesive-based approach (i.e., contacting ebpcivicsi ). This thing is gonna need some serious protection given the application- all-weather/year-round hauling of three big dogs...to the sorts of places that are *not* nice-vehicle-friendly.

BTW, I have 3m protection film and the best polish i've found to use is PO85RD on a meguiar's beige or LC grey pad. Long working + gentle enough not to induce marring on the soft clear bra. FPII would probably work as well due to its lubricity.

Vanilla Moose also works quite well.

Accumulator, I sent a quote request about an hour ago. Let's hope I hear from them some time tomorrow. I asked for 3 60"x60" clear blanks. I'll post here again if I hear any more news. BTW, according to the site, their static vinyl is 7.5mil thick. 0.5mil thinner than 3M. Now the question is how the heck am I going to cut out the pieces to conform to my hood and bumper? :)

FitSport- Please keep us posted! Even if I go another route for the Yukon, I'm still interested in this idea and you might've found a great solution.

You're gonna have to find some material that'll both conform to the surfaces in question and be substantial enough for pattern transferring...while being easy to cut. Hm.... :nixweiss

Accumulator, I guess you and I are the only ones thinking about static cling vinyls...hehehe. Anyway, I emailed the guys that sell Tankslapper yesterday, and I got a response today.

We don't recommend the "Tankslapper film for the front of a car Sport, but here is how we sell it.

The roll is 24" wide and the cost is $7.00 per foot for the “Tankslapper material, $11.00 for the 3M adhesive backed film. To order online, order any standard "Tankslapper" kit and in the "Comments" box on the order page, indicate the quantity you would like, and we'll adjust the billing when we process you order.

Important, make sure to indicate that you don't want the ordered kit, only the bulk film.

Thanks for your interest,

That's in USD by the way in case other people are reading. For a 24"x72" that's $42 plus shipping. I still have yet to hear from the boys of Window-Cling. Depending on the price, if Window-Cling can get me larger than 24", then I might go with them. :)
