Squeegees

Howdy folks,

Just a quick question regarding window washing. I was at home depot the other day and I found a shelf that contained a vast array of squeegees and was going to pick one up but thought I'd check here first for opinion. Is it better to clean a windshield and all of my other windows with a squeegee or just spray and wipe? I think the squeegee is faster, but Im afraid that whatever dirt I dont remove, will be caught under the rubber and will scratch the glass. Any thoughts?

This probably depends on two factors: 1) How soft the squeegee is (Similar to California Water Blade is good) and 2)Whether or not there are dirt particles on the paint surface. Like all products with no nap (Absorber, Water Blade) it is always imperative to get rid of any dust particles first before getting water off the windows. Personally, I take a damp cloth first to clean off any marks and then follow up with a wax buffing towel to provide water repellant properties. I've used squeegees, and the windows came out well. The main problem is with the drippings. You should probably place a towel on the dash before starting, otherwise you may get solution on the dash or even in the vents. You may also get drippings in the tracks of the side windows, which may cause smears when the window is rolled down.

Still, it's a pretty fast way to get a streak free window, IMO.

As to the scratches, there shouldn't be much that would scratch left on the glass after scrubbing. You should be removing mostly solution and emulsified grime. The metal clasps and shaft would be a bigger concern, at least on the inside.

Another method to effectively eliminate the need to use a squeegee would be to wax the windows well (or use Rain-X) and after you wash it, use the "free-flow" nozzle method to remove 90% of the water. The next 10% can be easily removed by a WW, MF, or the Absorber.
