Special Mod

Hey guys, i been thinkin about gettin a special mod, dunno about the legality of it all, but thats an issue i am willing to ignore for the moment hehe. ;)

anyway, i wanna get some form of license plate holder that is motorized that can flip/reverse the plate, kinda like a hide away plate... i think some hot rodders have these on their rides...

i'd like to do this with MINIMUM amount of fabrication needed to be made on my 4x4...

any info will be GREATLY appreciated :bow :xyxthumbs

I have not seen such a thing apart from on James Bond type cars.

This sounds like a serious job involving a lot of cutting and fabrication. My guess is you would need a few motors, linkages and room for it all to move and then make it weather proof. If nothing else, it sounds expensive.

Maybe hot rodders know a lot more than I do.

I think this would be one case where it'd pay to be handy and enginuitive.... if you want to hide it, I imagine it'd start with figuring out how to cut away the bumper area that holds the plate, and somehow mount the plate on the other side while allowing it to flip around... unless you make a triangular structure.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more complex this idea becomes. :lol

I am not so sure if this is possible, but I remember my dad telling me about his muscle car days in the 70s and his buddies used to wire the license plate bulb lights to a switch so at night time the plate is pretty much invisible with the flick of a switch ... a lot easier than rigging up that "special mod"... good luck and remember you didnt here this from me !

If anyone has back copies of Car & Driver from the 80's, there was an article on a stealth Corvette with several swappable license plates and different brake light patterns. I seem to remember the mag showing how the conversion was done, even if not in perfect detail.

You would think knowing this dates me, but it actually dates how early my fascination with cars started. Born in '77, subscribed to C&D in '84:up

yeah, they sell kits for this in any hotrod catalog, some are manual with a cable, others are electric. I think it is called a "hideaway plate"

Personally, I think it is ghey.....and you will get in trouble with the police if a officer ever sees you flip it.
