South Carolina Detailing

I've been in Greenville for about 4 years and we find the area very easy to live.

I'm in the Five Forks area.

If you get here and need any help (or emergency supplies) just let me know and I'll do what I can.

Good luck!

Hi Jackerooni,

I can probably offer pretty good insight of the Greenville/Spartanburg area of SC “the upstate”, from the perspective of an outsider. Which will probably be a bit different than a local's perspective. My wife and I transferred down here from the Philadelphia area about 3 year ago.

To sum it up…it’s very “nice”.

First a little lay of the land. There are three primary city/suburban areas that make up the upstate area of SC - Greenville, Spartanburg and Greer. It seems like people who lived down here for a while are very territorial of these respective addresses…not so much me. The three areas basically form a triangle, which in my opinion are growing and merging together rather quickly and for the most part are forming one “city”. You're basically less than 40 minutes from any end point to end point within the triangle. As you noted there is Laurens Rd (aka the motor mile) which houses most of the dealerships for Greenville…that also will have most of the higher end dealerships for the upstate area, however Greer and Spartanburg also each have quite a few of their own dealerships.

When we first moved down here we lived in Greenville, kind of on the border of Greenville and Greer. You’ll notice much of the new growth is happening in this middle area of the triangle, which is nice because it keeps the whole area relatively convenient. Last year we bought a house in Spartanburg…basically on the border of Spartanburg and Greenville. From our house we can get to downtown Spartanburg in about 15 minutes, downtown Greer in about 20 minutes and downtown Greenville in about 25 minutes. You’ll find there are many areas down here that have that kind of relativity, as I said, much of the growth is in this middle area of the triangle. We moved to Spartanburg (among other reasons) to shorten our commute to work. We both work in the Spartanburg area and while living in Greenville hardly had a long commute (15-20 minutes) we now have about a 10 minute commute. You can get very spoiled down here with respect to commuting…we left the Philly area each having over an hour commute to work each day, to now having about 10 minutes.

Housing down here, compared to the Philly area, is FANTASTIC!! We were able to purchase 3X the house and 5X the lot size that we could have up north and property taxes are also very low. Again, this is vs. the Philly suburb area…I don’t really know about Flint. I don’t know if you saw but Spartanburg was just named the second strongest housing market in the country The 10 strongest U.S. housing markets - MSN Real Estate and Greenville/Spartanburg was also named second best “big city with low rent” Biggest cities, lowest rents 2008 - MSN Real Estate

I don’t know if you can really say that this area was untouched by the economic slow-down, but it certainly seems to be doing quite well compared to other areas of the country.

As far as “things to do” we still really like downtown Greenville and they seem to take the lead when it comes to entertainment….though Greer and Spartanburg both also have their own things happening. Again it’s all very accessible which is nice. We usually go wherever has whatever going on we want to do…just seems to usually be Greenville.

I can’t say I really looked for any “better” detailers in the area…being an Autopian I prefer to do my own. But I agree, just from looking around, by appearance, most seem to be “not so nice“.

One last note…the people. The locals, as you noted, def have the southern charm. Very friendly and wanting to help, which was a welcomed surprise for this cynical Yankee. But also there is a large portion of the population that are transplants…many Yankees as well as Europeans. BMW, Fluor and Michelin all have large offices/plants here as well as many large US Corporations. So you get a really nice mixture of people.

Hope this gives you a little bit to chew on…if you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask.

awesome info guys. I can't wait. I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. I've lived here pretty much all of my life so it's what I know and what I'm familiar with. Which has it's obvious pro's and cons to it.

As far as going with detailing in mind as my sole income. It's a scary thing I know. But outside of a couple of oddball factory jobs out of high school I've spent most of my adult life as an Design Engineer for GM. Which obviously is a very niche market. GM uses a program called Unigraphics NX. outside of GM and it's direct suppliers very very few companies use this program because it's insanly expensive. (last I checked it was still about $20,000 per seat) Well with GM doing it's lovely business as usual there's really just not many options in the design world for me. Unless of course I go back and Learn something like Catia. which would be a whole new degree. So I really don't know what to do. The wife works, we both have an online store that brings in a few extra bucks for us every month.. Enough to make the bills. The detailing would be for the passion behind it and just for extra cash until I find something or finish out my second degree I'm half way through with Graphic Communications. Which seems to have a HUGE demand down there in Greenville. Just need to find a college there that will let me transfere my credits so I can continue. Figure once those pieces fall into place things will be fine. Until then it's just detailing on the side and maybe a part time job at some factory or something..
