South Carolina Detailing

Well guys it's time to call a spade a spade and realize the detailing dream in Flint is pretty much dead. I haven't had a call in weeks and I'm getting behind on all the bills too. The wife's shop never had a chance to get off the ground due to the appressing economy and it just basically sucks around here all around. we have a 29% reported unemployment rate. (probably much higher in reality) and it's only going to get worse it seems. But the wife got a job offer in the Greenville SC area and we're more than seriously thinking about it. Like within the next week or two by the looks of it. (Hate last second moves) Looking up housing in the area. Seems to be pretty comparable to here for the most part but the jobs seem to be pretty pleantiful. Not sure what the detailing sceen is like there. But I do have an engineering degree as well and there seemed to be a few listing in that area as well from the couple of quick searches I did. I guess I'm posting this to let anyone that cares know and to ask if there is any good detailers I can look up when I get down there and see where this crazy friggin rollar coster ride leads me. It's all about the location. And I think if i keep up with the detailing I can do it mostly year round in SC if I'm not mistaken...

Thanks. They offered her $65/hr to start with insurence. so it's nice offer. And I could defiantly use a change of scenery that's for sure. I really think it's a good thing. we'll see how it all shapes up.

Exact same reason I left the D too. Megasmegma props to you Jake. I wish you all the luck in the world with what ever you choose to take on.

You know SC is the ***** sister to NC right lol?

Seriously, if and when you get to SC, I am only a short drive from you in Raleigh, let me know if you need anything.

I feel your pain my friend, i live in in asheboro nc where the zoo is and a few months ago in forbes we were the 4th poorest city in the nation. i lost alot of customers and picked up 2 parttime jobs to make ends meet. things are picking up tho ive been getting alot of calls lately so lets pray this economy bounces back for every1. good luck on your move and since this area is started to get detail happy we should have a meet here again i will be there.

I am sorry to hear you're struggling. A move to a different area could be exactly what you need. You could do everything perfect but in the wrong area it would not matter.

Shoot, in my neck of the woods nothing but retardedly cheap washes are what people want. I get to drive 1 hour 10 minutes every day into the right area.

Hahaha I love the joke. North Carolina baby!

i am in columbia about 90 miles away form the greenville area. origanilly from LI NY ...its wonderful here mild winters 6 months summers. however it is slightly cooler there then here (elavation) but you would be 1 hour form columbia 3 from the beach. minutes form the mountains. atlanta...charlotte and greensboro are also very close major cities.

as far as jobs there are quite a few plants left in the area including bmw and a plant tat makes hydraulic equipment for volvo trucks. im sure with an engineering degree you could find gainful employment at one.

if i read correct 65$hr will go a loooooonggg way in sc.. unless you are used to living in a mansion lol.

as far as detailing i will tell you this . must detail shops here are hacks , but there are a few good ones. your market to tap into would be the huge race/show/customize scene in the upstate. also the older retired folks who cant/dont want to clean their own cars any more. i would also look into rv detailing as that part of the start has a good many rv parks.

you can detail year round here...its few days when the temp does not reach at least 50 even in the winter ..which only last december-mid march really.

anything i can help with let me know

Holy crap, Jake. I haven't been in Flint since '82...but it makes me sick thinking about how we've decimated mfg. in this country blah blah blah nobody wants to hear my rant. If you gotta go, you gotta go. Maybe engineering the second time around will be a better experience...perhaps a smaller co. will fit you better.

Greenville is a great place to live. I grew up in that area, but my job brought me to Florence, SC . PM me if you want to know more about schools, neighborhoods, whatever. Sorry I don't know any detailers in the area, but people do tend to care about thier cars there, so I'd think there would be a good market.

Thanks guys. And I'm up for any information anyone can give us about the area, state, etc etc... Any area's to avoid? I mean coming from flint I doubt I'd run into anything worse that what we already have to deal with. But I'm really sick and tired of blight and crime...Also looking for a good college to transfer some credits too. I'm currently enrolled in Graphic Communitcations/Web desgin. (still early in the degree) and the wife is going back for interior design and we can't seem to find anything on google searches about colleges in the greenville area that teach these courses. (looks like Charleston is the closest that pops up)

I get a decent paycheck from a corparte account I have up here at the beginning of the month. We're going to head down and start looking around at actual houses here then. So about 2 weeks it looks like I'll get my first taste of it. (Never been to the carolina's)

I think Winthrop (Rock Hill, SC) has interior design and I know Clemson has Graphic Communication. Niether are really close, but I used to do the Greenville/Clemson commute in about 45 minutes. Winthrop would be a challenging commute from Greenville, more like 1.5 hours probably. Greenville Tech is a big tech school that may offer some courses more conveniently. You can also check out Converse College (spartanburg), Furman University (greenville), Wofford (spartanburg), USC Upstate campus (spartanburg).

Man I am sorry to hear. The economy took a toll on me as well. I was laid off from my job in Charlotte. 6 months it took me to find work. My family and I now live in Greensboro. I detail on the side and can only dream of one day running a shop full time. With the wife making $65.hr you guys will be set. Good luck with everything

well it sounds much better than it is guys. remember massage therapist don't work 40 hour weeks. A very looong week would be more like 20-25 hours. Just the nature of the beast. But it still should be a decent wage down there. And there seems to be just tons of jobs available all over down there. Compared to here it just seemd completly overwhelming about the amount of opportunities down there. Can't wait to get down there and really get a chance to look around. I still say going from flint (which is nationally known as being one of the absoulte worst economies in the entire nation right now) I think anything will be a step up. that and I'm just sick of Michigan winters.

well just to update... We just got back from Greenville. Spent most of last week there looking around and such. Found a house that suits the needs quite well and really affordable. The people are really nice there. Downtown is awesome. Took a ton of pics. Looks like October 1st will be the move date tenitively. I couldn't beleive the car lots down there all in a row. From Lotus to BMW, Mercedes, Jag, Toyo... And if there's a recessesion apparently Greenville didn't get the memo. Seems like just about everyone is hiring for for good money plus benifits to most places I talked with. I did check out a few detailers there. The set-ups for the most part are real shady and nothing I would even want to be a part of. Run down dirty buildings, Spray painted sheets of plywood for signage, etc etc.. Just seemed rather low class if you asked me. Which is scary if that's what the people there are acustomed too. Trying to teach an area that big what real detailing is isn't going to be easy by any means. I think I would rather work at one of the higher end dealerships. Or just do something else all together and just detail on the side down there until I get a decent clientel built up. Just from what I've seen it didn't seem that detailing was really high on the list of priorities to most people there. But it could just be the areas I saw.. Way to big to take in everything in the few days I was there for. Getting excited though. I just loved it down there. I think it's going to work out great.

good luck jake, I have contemplated moving as well, but not with detailing in mind as a sole source of income! Hope it all works out for you in the end!
