Son1c Home Brew Carnauba Wax - ProtoWax -> Picture Heavy

Being a waxaholic I've always been fascinated by paste waxes. Taking inspiration from dodo juice, rubbishboys, bouncers, and a few others I figured I'd take the plunge.

Note - I'd appreciate any and all positive input to help me better my wax, thank you :D

After a solid 12 hours of research I ordered up my initial supplies, heeding advise from those wiser I aimed to keep it simple initially.

Hit the ground running with my understanding of the basic essentials, I have a ton of products on order but this is basically what the first dozen of formulations have consisted of

I have had the DoDo Juice Home Brew kit for awhile now but haven't gotten around to brewing it, I figured there would never be a more perfect occasion to do so then to kick off my own home brewing with it.. Fun kit btw highly recommended!

Now for the production of Son1c's ProtoWax ..

ProtoWax 1 credit to dodo juice / dodofactory for this recipe

20g nuba

5g yellow beeswax

50ml coconut oil

Warming up the Coconut Oil so it turns into its liquid form, I'm assuming this is relatively how everyone does this?

Definitely a wax, but much too hard to be a good candidate for automotive wax production imo

Did not haze well / buff off well either, granted I used it on an non prepped wooden table..

Stay tuned..

It's interesting creating your own wax, being a consumer, you typically read the ingredients on the wax, for example beeswax, (obviously nuba will be in the mix), montan wax, candelilla wax, almond oil, etc, but actually working with them are totally different.

For example candelilla wax is incredibly hard, as well as carnauba, beeswax is pliable even more so when compared with these other two waxes..

Also the true Carnauba % in waxes, blows your mind when you're trying to develop a high content Carnauba wax and have it actually work! Very quickly can these turn to bricks.

When ProtoWax 1 was underway I was already concocting ProtoWax 2

15g nuba

5g white beeswax

15g candelilla wax

80 ml coconut oil

How much does a polar bear weigh? Enough to break the wax

Onto ProtoWax 3 while ProtoWax 2 cools..

ProtoWax 4

Dropped Wax contents down and bumped solvents up

Now we're getting somewhere! First ProtoWax I was happy with!

ProtoWax 5

Brewing..Brewing..Brewing..

Coconut based 30% wax contents

Too hard..

null_zps71331d4b.jpg

ProtoWax 6 .. 50/50 wax solvent split coconut and turpentine solvents nuba+beeswax

ProtoWax 7 ..

40% wax content 60% solvent content vast majority natural based

Too hard

ProtoWax 8 ..

While creating Son1c ProtoWax 8 the doorbell rang and UPS dropped this off..

Looks like I have a new solvent to play with ;)

So naturally I created a Linseed oil based wax, decided 100% on linseed for this solvent

20g nuba

5g yellow beeswax

5g candelilla wax

70 ml raw linseed oil

Definitely has potential, but needs fine tuning and I imagine another solvent or two

ProtoWax 9 - At this point I developed some decent confidence especially after playing around with ProtoWax 4

I have picked up several containers for candidates for the finished product of Son1c home brew, so I did a 250 ml / ~8 oz pour

Great texture on this one, reminded me of some other production waxes, but I need to play around with my solvents as I'm not satisfied and workability needs to be top notch

ProtoWax 10 Heavy on the beeswax

Not bad but not where I want it

ProtoWax 11 Linseed V2

~30% wax

:)

ProtoWax 12

20g nuba

10g white beeswax

20ml turpentine

20ml coconut oil

20ml linseed oil

Too hard

ProtoWax 13

Variation of 12

Still too hard

Trying to sleep last night I toss and turned what if I added this and that, reduced this and that lol, oddly addictive!

Have a few waxes on order, another solvent, silicone, almond oil, a couple other oils, several fragrances, and trying to find some dyes

While eating breakfast this morning I figured why not cook up that recipe I designed last night instead of getting the sleep I needed lol

ProtoWax 14 Progress...

This one has a higher wax content then ProtoWax 4, multiple solvent base, just based on looks and feel, 14 reminds me of an unrefined version of signature series II, turns to butter on the touch, a bit grainy for my taste atm though, haven't had the chance to test this on on anything as its also still drying being concocted ~2 hours ago

At this point I've basically depleted my coconut oil, my turpentine, beeswaxes are starting to take a hit, some field testing will be conducted today, ideally I'd like to test some beading and sheeting as well, will report back on that hopefully later today with results, pictures, and possibly some video!

For the record my waxes aren't a recipe in sequence, I have about 3 or 4 "strands" think DNA and I'm trying to evolve the strand, however the numbers correlate to production and not evolution

For fun.. Coconut Oil and another Container Test

Update 5

the infamous CD test

Sheeting -- not an official test but

//

ProtoWax 15

Halfway through application -> applied to whole CD

ProtoWax 16 BeesWax based

My home brewing buddy!

USPS and UPS delivered some new goodies today, felt like I did when I got my straight 8 kit! haha

Needless to say I had to put some of them to use!

ProtoWax 17 Pioneering territory , at least in my Wax World

~10 waxes are going out for further testing in a bit

Update 6 !

Some real world testing, products tested on a unclayed, abused, unpolished truck, cleaned and IPA'd (as if there was anything there haha)

Waxed vs Non -> ProtoWax

//

My waxes are currently wet on wet off, they'll buff off clean but I cannot get them to haze? Not that this is the biggest issue as I'm not opposed to wet on / off waxes -> as long as it does not turn to concrete like some waxes!

My stand outs .. ProtoWax 4 and ProtoWax 17

I will start with ProtoWax 17

This wax is entirely different from every other one of my productions, and it needs fine tuning however I was very happy with it's first formulation

Note my waxes are basically all natural currently, I haven't gotten to adding silicones and polymers .. yet ;)

Beads and Sheeting!

Progress!

Good stuff. I've always wanted to do it but just never have the time. TOWGT turned me on to some great formulary books that can be found on Google books. They are a bit old school but have some interesting stuff.

It's actually very interesting. If you get really good at it sonic, can you order the expensive "brazilian" wax that swissvax charges like 1,100.00 each for? Even though i've never heard of something so ridiculous, it could still make you money :) Especially since you could charge less.

yep, this. Definitely is good experience if nothing else to know when you are looking at waxes you'll understand far better than most of the people out there.

a lot of work man... it's good though, you'll stumble onto it before long I think.

I hope so!

Can you recall any of the names?

Thanks though and if you do take the plunge be warned, it's strangely addictive and becomes expensive quickly!

Thanks! That's the dream!

Oh yeah, I thought I was relatively up to speed on waxes as a consumer, completely different view on them now.. However the higher prices of boutique waxes for example bouncer waxes are definitely within reason depending on the products and solvents used, some solvents are very pricey

That's some mad scientist stuff right there! Props for your patience and determination. I couldn't do that.

Haha something like that! Thanks Ronnie!

Update 7

Son1c Wax has hit facebook -> Watch out for a facebook product give away down the road ;)

https://www.facebook.com/Son1cWax

Son1c Wax also has its own domain now

www.Son1cWax.com

(Currently just a forward)

Since my last update I have picked up ~5 or so new solvents

With new solvents come new findings and new issues

I have also been trying to add some new ingredients to the mix

Any thoughts on this coconut oil?

It's cheaper than my last kind but doesn't smell half as sweet, the texture is different as well

This turpentine smells awful as well

I have been playing around with container ideas as well..

I'm really like this 4 oz

ProtoWax 21

ProtoWax 19

"Cool it"

Testing..

ProtoWax 18

Spy Cam

ProtoWax 20

ProtoWax 22

ProtoWax 21 -- enjoying the texture!

ProtoWax 19 -- Not bad either!

ProtoWax 23 - High hopes for this one as this formula has been improved and altered ~5 times

ProtoWax 22 - cooled -> looking a bit hard

Not solid nuba block hard, but the texture needs refinement, brittle you could say on this formulation, but new solvents new problems!

ProtoWax 24

:D

ProtoWax 25 - High hopes for this one as well

What caused this (not 25)

To be continued..

Update 7.5

ProtoWax 23

ProtoWax 25 my first hazer, pretty quick too, (majority of other successful ProtoWax 's have been wet on wet off)

ProtoWax 26 -> Steamy ;)

ProtoWax 22

In the midst of all this I also whipped up a 15 oz of RTU Eco Touch Waterless Wash from my concentrate :D

To sum things up I'm very happy with how things are going, I'm definitely making progress and I have faith that I will be able to produce a quality product, I appreciate everyone's positive input and support! I need to do more testing with my more recent ProtoWax's hoping to have some time for this today but no promises as I need to detail my own car as he's 2 months over due!

Hopefully breaking out Rubbishboys Original Edition in spirit of my own wax production

very cool man... keep working on it and we'll start picking some up from you ;)

:)

Thank you for the continued support!

Anything in particular you'd like to see from the wax? or could you describe your "dream wax"

Update 8*

ProtoWax 26 ...

Pretty clean buff off

:D

Easy on, spread decently far, relatively easy off, became tacky when it was ready to buff off, good looks imo, tight beading imo

Note - surface prepped with multiple IPA wipedowns prior to each wax application

Control Group?

Bouncer's Wax Satsuma Rock

ProtoWax 25

So that was the good!

Now the bad..

ProtoWax 24 was a shot in the dark with a new solvent, I think I missed!
